Hi

When searching for items with unidentified script:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=&st=150-149&cat=y&im1=&im2=&ru=&ie=&ca=3&no=&v=&a=&dg=&i=&b=missing&m=&f=&t=&t2=&w=&mt=&u=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=

You get a lot of matches, which do not have unidentified Scripts, eg. N#311258

Is this search result correct or should search results show only those items, that have text added in the fields Obverse and Reverse Lettering and the Script field is empty?

LP

Agreed. I did all three - coin, token, banknote -

and got over 80,000 results. So for ease of checking,

I chose a smaller selection and only looked in UK section.

Yes some pages in there did have say Latin already chosen -

BUT only for one side. Does the unidentified only

stop being in the result when both sides are chosen?

Surely if one side is Latin, then both sides should be,

unless there are a few exceptions. Of those in the

result that did not have a script at all, then yes they

can be in the result.

However, some could never have say Latin for either obverse or reverse -

because there is no lettering on a side. Example, from my search

N#76894

where obverse has Latin, reverse has a pretty picture.

So I guess Latin could somehow not automatically be put in the reverse

section, as it has no lettering there at all.

Maybe the unidentified should only appear in

the result if neither side has a script.

Even then there may be some exceptions, especially tokens

that have images only and no lettering.

Maybe have a choice of ‘None’ added to the drop-down list, so

that future page creations, or existing ones, can have None put on the page,

for the purpose of exclusion from an unidentified search.

Also does the Robot look in the lettering section on a page,

and is programmed to automatically put say Latin in the script section -

especially with script being fairly new addition to page creation,

Or does some poor soul have to change hundreds of older pages manually? :(

I think the easiest fix is to first check if lettering field exists. If not, skip the check for script. That should cover all examples. Currently Script is not checked for edge lettering and probably should be but only if lettering exists.

I did just wonder if None (or similar) was already in

the drop-down script list, at the end, and it is not.

I went to an item in my collection that did have lettering on the page

but no script, so I went in there now and added it ,

and saw all the choices are in alphabetical order.

Except … down around letter R there are two

unknown scripts that are out of place

Cirth

Elder Futhark

 whatever they are.

Have they just been added, and an overnight refresh would move them -

or is it an error and someone has to move them -

and even then how did they get so far from where they should be? Thanks

Edit:  Here's why

Should have been created as Runic (Cirth) and Runic (Elder Futhark).

 Agreed. Thanks :)

From that latest search where I changed one page, having

chosen - my collection: in - the first (and second) item I amended

only had lettering on one side [Latin], and after that I refreshed

the results page, and it still showed 3 results. My last item

actually did have lettering on both sides, and after amendment

the result did refresh to 2 items - so that page I just changed is no

longer marked in the system as unidentified, so it seems

that is how the system works - both sides needed.

Hence my earlier ‘None’ suggestion, for items that nobody

could add a script on to the page, as there is literally none.

I guess doing that has unfortunately to be done manually,

as if the Robot found nothing in either lettering section it

would not know it was because even though physically on the item,

the page creator did not add the lettering - for some reason.

Hello,

As you understood, the search for Unidentified script returns all items that have either no obverse script or no reverse script.
Since we currently don't have a way to specify that a side has no lettering, there is no straightforward fix for this issue.

My initial question was why it is not possible to quickly locate items, which have text added in the fields Obverse and Reverse Lettering and there is no Script value is added. And in reverse, there is script added, but no text in the Obverse and Reverse Lettering. The question was intended to be able to find and add more data outside of my personal referee scope, or simpy as a general user.
