Subject: 1853 Half Penny – Missing Top Dot in Colon After “BRITANNIAR”
Hi all,
I’m hoping someone here might be able to shed light on a possible minting anomaly I’ve found on a British 1853 half penny. On the reverse, the colon after “BRITANNIAR” appears to be missing the top dot—only the lower dot is clearly struck.
Here’s what I’ve observed:
• The rest of the coin is well-struck, with no signs of post-mint damage in that area.
• The missing dot doesn’t appear to be due to wear, as surrounding details are sharp.
• I’ve checked a few online examples, but haven’t yet found another with this exact feature.
I’m wondering:
• Has anyone seen this before on an 1853 half penny?
• Could this be a known die fill or minor variety?
• Is it worth documenting or attributing?
Here’s a photo of the reverse (close-up of the colon included):
Any insights or comparisons would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Anthony
