Help identificatying copper coin with only head of Napoelon III(?) -26mm / 6g [Risolto]

Pubblicazioni di 8 • visto 85 volte

Hello everyone,

I´m trying to identify an old coin, possibly copper or bronze, which is very worn and oxidized. Here are the details I was able to observe:

Diameter: 26,04mm

Weight: around 6g

Thickness: less than 2mm

Color: greenish (copper corrosio)

Shape: round and regular, no visible clipping

Observe: only a bare-headed bust facing right is visibl, with a clearly marked bear. No hair, no inscription, no border or circle. The head fills almost the entire surface.

Reverse: completely smooth due to corrosion; no visible design or inscription, but signs of metal overflow or lumps, like melted areas.

I suspect it might be a striking error, a misstruck flan, or perhaps an unofficial token or test strike bearing the likeness of Napoleon III.

Has anyone seen a coin like this before, with only the head and no inscriptions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Without pictures, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you. Could you please post clear pictures of each side of your item?

English - not Napoleon III - it can even be seen lower

left of first picture EDW for EDWARD lettering.

If reverse is slightly rotated there is Britannia shown.

There may be ‘no visible clipping’ but it has been clipped -

maybe from N#857

as N#1867 is smaller

and the EDW is already at the edge so the outside part has been

removed, for some reason. For comparison >

Thanks a lot!

Do you know which reason would have led to this part removed? Robbing metal by thieves ?

Certainly not their metal - it is only Bronze.

Maybe to fit into a necklace / pendant holder - an almost complete loop which is

tightened at the top. As the original coin would not have fitted in once it was closed,

the diameter would have to be slightly reduced so the band round it could be tightened.

These are modern-day versions, in different metals and sizes.

Then again, maybe a completely different reason for the size reduction.
