Name: Currency Board of Catalonia
Local Name: Junta de Moneda de Cataluña
Dates of operation: 1852-1856
Place: Barcelona, Spain
Description:
By Royal Decree of 27 June 1852, the progressive reduction of payments for economic transactions with copper coins of Castilian denomination, a currency known in Spanish “Calderilla”, was established. However, to achieve this, it was necessary to previously regularize the situation and therefore eliminate the Catalan currency, that is, this copper coin that had been minted in Catalonia in different periods of the 19th century (1809-1816; 1820-1823; 1836-1847). For this reason, on 5 August 1852, the Royal Decree was issued by which the Currency Board of Catalonia (Junta de Moneda de Cataluña) was created, with headquarters in Barcelona and under the presidency of the Captain General in coordination with the provincial councils. The first session of the Board took place on 24 August 1852. The main objective was to withdraw the Catalan coin in exchange for the Castilian coin. In this way, the aim was to harmonise the monetary unit of those times. The massive presence of copper coins (Catalan and Spanish) was causing serious setbacks to the economic planning of the State and they wanted to withdraw them from circulation. However, in order to centralise efforts, it was necessary in the first instance that all the copper coins to be withdrawn were exactly the same and, thus, intermediate regularisation operations would be saved. For this reason, the activity of the “Junta de la Moneda de Cataluña” decreased over the months and ended up deciding to abandon its objective in the face of the continuous difficulties that arose. One of the last was to verify how a measure they had undertaken, the replacement of currency with paper money, was being corrupted by the appearance of counterfeits. The last session took place on 29 June 1856.
