Hi everyone, I'm looking to make some more swaps, mainly looking for 2012-year coins for my son's birthyear set, but would be interested in anything I don't have.
I just added a bunch of Canadian coins, lots of commemorative quarters and newer pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
From any country?
I have so far these five U.K. 2012 coins - 1p 2p 5p 20p 50p
and have not seen 10p £1 £2 yet (even though it is already 1/4 way through 2013).
Just quickly made those night-time pictures to show them. Could make better ones I guess.
Yes - I have a bag in which I put every shiny coin in that I get in change, in case a swapper wants some newer UK coins (exactly like this topic) and there are no 10p or £1 in there!
P.S. In that picture are a few £1 but they are from 2011 but are in there as they are shiny, so there are not just 2012 within; there is also in there a shiny 2007 2p coin, for example.
P.P.S. I mark the 2012 1p to 50p as being available for a swap (not that I currently have swaps enabled) so that in time I will get some for a swap in pocket change, including 10p eventually.

Typical - only yesterday I posted coins for a swap, and today I get my first-ever 2012 UK 10p coin (so still want a 2012 £1 as well - thanks Mark!).
Though in a way I guess as that was my first one then it should go into my collection, and only spares are for swapping. Cold comfort for swap partner - sorry! If only I'd have known I was going to get one ...
Thanks - and the expression about buses 'you wait ages for one to come along and then two come together' applies, for me, to coins - as wouldn't you know it I got my second 2012 10p today (in pocket change, from a shop). So the banks here must have had a delivery of them recently.
(For another Topic ) I did actually go into my bank today, and asked if they had any 2013 £2 coins - the Underground Train or the Guinea Coin designs, but the cashier said none seen so far, and he actually wanted some himself. So I guess he also asked his colleagues as well, so the public won't be seeing them for some time - assuming they are circulation issues that is.
(For another Topic ) Then I got into the Post Office around 5:20 before 5:30 closing, to post a swap to Slovenia, and asked if they had any Doctor Who stamps; which they did but in the little shop within there which also sold greetings card etc, but that part closed at 5:00 for some reason. Otherwise I'd have got a few and sent in pictures. As tomorrow is Good Friday they are not open so I may go in again on Saturday.
It is OK now Mark - I got my first 2012 UK £1 coin today!
Just the one, so it's now in my collection, and so no spares yet. Maybe I'll get another tomorrow - like happened with the above-mentioned 10p coin ?!
P.S. Even though now 1/4 way through 2013 I have seen no UK 2013 coins yet - not one !?!
OMG, as they say - I was right! I did get another 2012 UK £1 yesterday; in fact two of them.
So they are now spares, as the first is in my collection; not that I do swaps these days. Now waiting for the 2013 coins to appear, especially the new £2 (see above) - either the Underground train one or the beautiful Guinea coin reverse.
Though now having seen the 2013 UK £1 coins above, I want those as well. Maybe April 2014 before I get those I guess.
And finally - got the 2012 UK £2 coin in change yestrerday; so if only I had waited I could have sent all eight circulating coins for the swap. Also yesterday was a good day as I got a commemorative 50 pence, a 2012 £1 again, a rare 1992 10 pence variant, and an error (extra metal on left above H) 1 pence coin ...
Not generally, but there are six types, two of which are rare.
The first type is the old larger 28.5mm size, then later part of 1992 the smaller 24.5mm began.
So the old type is just one coin and is no longer in circulation, and in the new type there are five varieties. The one type with a rounded edge is ignored, and there are four types of the flat edge coin.
I have added below close-ups of what I got yesterday which better shows what to look for ...
Obverse: the I in ELIZABETH either points at a dot on the border or between dots.
Reverse: the base of the 1 of 10 numeral either points at a dot on the border or between dots.
The common coins are are mixture; if obverse points at a dot then reverse usually points between dots. Or the other way round also. So apart from those two types, the rare ones are where it is the same both sides; where obverse and reverse are between dots (like I got yesterday), or where they point at a dot.
On that link above are explained the differences, using numbers and letters. Seems mine is the 1B second rarest, with 2A being rarest. I firstly read about these on a site somewhere; I also saw a survey working out percentages of how often each of the last four types below turned up, and their findings are correct as most often the first two types (1A and 2B) appear in pocket change. And I haven't (until yesterday) seen a 1B in over a year. Only ever seen one 2A coin.
Summary of all six:
1 Old large 28.5mm size (discontinued)
2 Small 24.5mm size, rounded (wire) edge.
3 Small size, flat edge, type 1A - gap / dot
4 Small size, flat edge, type 2B - dot / gap
5 Small size, flat edge, type 1B - gap / gap
6 Small size, flat edge, type 2A - dot / dot
There is already the Topic below (June two years ago) that mentioned them; includes edge pictures, and a link to the site where I found out about them. In my summary above is how I call them - so dot / gap means obverse I points at a dot and reverse 1 points at the gap between dots.
