Since I've recently seen some inconsistencies and confusion about the grading scale and its equivalency between languages (including me and other Numista users) I believe I have come up with a good and simple idea to solve this problem.

Several things would need to be implemented to fix this issue:

1. I know that multiple grading scales exist across the different languages available on Numista, but I think that at least one scale per language should be standardized on Numista. I believe this would be the hardest part, since finding a scale that has exact equivalency with the English scale can be challenging. However, I think it needs to be done, maybe by creating a poll in each language to determine which scale users of that language prefer.

2. After a definitive scale has been selected for each language, the meaning of each grade in that scale should be included in the guide for its respective language, alongside the meanings of the English scale
(https://en.numista.com/help/what-do-g-vg-f-vf-xf-au-and-unc-mean-81.html).

3. Even if a scale is selected for each language, many collectors may not want to use the scale of their language for many reasons. That's why I think collectors should have the option to choose the scale they prefer, regardless of the language of the page. For example, if I am using the Portuguese version of Numista, I would like the option to change the grading scale without having to change the language of the entire website. This could be implemented, for example, in the account settings page, or by adding a single-option checkbox or a button group directly on the item pages. I suggest placing it between the “Manage my collection” section and the “Add to my collection” section, as shown here. On the Spanish site, for instance, the options could be “Escala en Inglés” and “Escala en Español.”

Another thing that can be implemented on the page is to insert a tooltip (passing the cursor on top of something and seeing a text bow without clicking) to every grade on the scales showing the complete meaning of the abbreviations.

What else should be included?? would you change something?? what do you think about this solution??

(Shout out to davidhs for asking me about this issue)

No entiendo dónde está el problema. Siempre he hecho una correspondencia como la de la tabla que viene en los SCWC y me vale. Supongo que las etiquetas que aparecen en Numista para los grados se podrán traducir como cualquier otra.

I like the idea. I will comment on the points above:

  1. This is the most difficult point. Find a scale in each language that exact corresponds exactly to the scale used in Numista. However I do not think it is necessary to establish a scale in all languages before implementing the idea. For example, scales could be created and implemented in English and French (with exact correspondences), and later more scales could be added to the system.

In the current situation, three of the languages active in Numista, in addition to English, use the scale in English. The others use their own scale, but the fields with the collections are the same. Of these latter, Portuguese has some grades without exact correspondence and use two grades in one field.

  2.  Also, add a guide similar to https://en.numista.com/numisdoc/how-to-grade-my-coin-58.html for objects like-coins and like-banknotes.

  3. Personally, I prefer a option in the account setting, similar to the options with currency, weight unit, decimal separator and thousands separator. This selection will be saved and used in any device.

Numista has several topics with suggestions or issues related to the grading scale, that the could be solved with development of this suggestion. I found these by searching the forum, but there could be more:

This resolve this issues:

  • If we use the scale in French in the interface in French, a user with the interface in French always see the scale in French. If this user is used to use the scale in English, they have a problem. With the suggestion, the user will be able to select their preferred scale, regardless of the language.
  • I found different correspondences between the grading scales in English and Spanish. https://en.numista.com/forum/topic145957.html#p1159192 (I could be wrong)
  • Now, the decision regarding the scale to use in each language fall on the translator. With the suggestion, each user choose their scale.

Note: I requested to move this topic to the English side.
