Currency: Romania • First leu (1867-1947)
Code: 308 • roumanie
Subdivisions: 100 Bani = 1 Leu
Referee: @SpuDy

Numista has these coins of 12 Ducats (value 129): https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=roumanie&r=&st=all&cat=y&im1=&im2=&ru=&ie=&ca=3&no=&v=&cu=308&dn=28912&a=&dg=&i=&b=&m=&f=&t=&t2=&w=&mt=&u=&g=&c=&wi=&sw=&o=v

Is this a fix (12 Ducats = 129 Lei) or approximate (12 Ducats ≈ 129 Lei) relationship?

I suggest add the relationship with the Ducat

12 Ducats = 129 Lei → 4 Ducats = 43 Lei → 1 Ducat = 43/4 Lei → 1 Ducat = 10.75 Lei (or 1 Ducat ≈ 10.75 Lei)

to the subdivisions:

100 Bani = 1 Leu
→ Apply guidelines and add the Ducat.
1 Leu = 100 Bani • 1 Ducat = 10.75 Lei

Well, that's more complicated than it looks.

First, Romania never had a currency named “Ducat”.

Those “medals” were actually issued in 2 sets of 6 gold pieces, but everywhere I read, they are considered collectible coins, not medals.

The value of 12 Ducats was associated with them based on the 42g weight that was the same as gold Ducats that circulated years before.

The gold purity in this coins was .900 compared to .986 in circulating Ducats. If we calculate by purity, the coins have a value of just 11 Ducats.

The value of 129 Lei was never ever mentioned in any official document, but 42g of .900 gold divided by 6,452g of .900 gold (the weight of a 20 Lei gold coin in circulation) equals about 129 lei, so it's an approximation.

I think we should not add the relationship between Leu and Ducat because there is none.

Regarding those are medals or coins, I can't find any official documents mentioning that, but some comments on coin pages say it's somewhere mentioned by a 1940 Law decree.

The Law calls them “ornamental goldies” (in romanian “galbeni de podoaba”) considering “goldie” (in romanian “galben”) was the popular term for a 20 Denomination gold coin 6.45g .900 (20 Lei, 20 Francs, etc.) that was from Latin Monetary Union.

Ok. I found information that pointed to that, but… 😁

I am preparing the translation of all Lei / Ban denominations (from Romania and Moldavia) into Spanish, adding the local name, and correcting the order of the subdivisions, and I found this strange denomination in the translators area.

I cancel my request because the order will be corrected after.

About the coins or medals of “12 Ducats”, we, the referees of Spain found a similar case. See https://en.numista.com/forum/topic145005.html#p1309103 and following (in Spanish). The local coin N#550485 is issued within the Catalan Pound currency (it is a 1 Escudo of other monetary system with a local countermark) but the Catalan Pound does not have denominations in Escudos, and the value in Catalan Pounds of the countermarked coin is unknown. In the page, we fill the currency as Catalan Pound, wrote the value “1 Escudo” in title, but leave empty the denomination.

I think this could be apply to those coins/medals. I will send modification requests, let me know what you think.

Yes, I agree.

I will mention the denomination story in commemts of each coin.

Yes.

The denomination of 12 Ducats was removed in the pages. The system will deleted the denomination from the currency in next maintain.

I see that all these coins commemorate the event

10th anniversary of the reign of King Carol II

(half of them explicitly mention it in the lettering), and they have  similar obverse design and physical characteristics, so I think this could be a series. I sent modification requests to add it.

If you agree with the series, later, when you write the denomination story, it can be moved to the series page.

Yes, they indeed are a series, I will check a bit later!

I modified them for 1940 series.
