The Tomás Francisco Prieto Medalist Award, named after the General Engraver of the Royal Mints of King Charles III, was revived in 1990 by the Royal Mint Foundation in the "Lifetime Achievement Award" category and with the aim of promoting the art of medal among leading figures in the Spanish art world, as the award entails a commitment from the winning artist to design a medal on a theme of their choosing. This medal is minted by the Royal Mint of Spain (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda) in a limited edition of 225 copper medals, 40 silver medals, and only two gold medals.
Tomás Francisco Prieto (Salamanca, 1716–Madrid, December 19, 1782) was a Spanish intaglio and medalist. He is considered a great master of engravers and a driving force behind Spanish medal making during the Enlightenment. He was a student in Salamanca of Lorenzo Monteman y Cusens; in 1747 he moved to Madrid where he held the position of director of intaglio engraving at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, a post in which he died, in addition to that of general engraver of the Royal Mints of King Charles III.
