Having a helpful discussion with @yensen1877 about how we credit the designers of coins that have been re-interpreted or redesigned as modern releases such as:
5 Pounds - Elizabeth II (Una and The Lion; Silver Proof) - United Kingdom – Numista original dies were used
5 Pounds - Elizabeth II (40th Coronation Jubilee) - United Kingdom – Numista used the portrait of Mary Gillick
Portraits of a Queen – Numista - credited by Royal Mint as designed by Gordon Sumemers using portraits from others
5 Pounds - Elizabeth II (1st portrait; Coronation Jubilee, Silver Proof) - United Kingdom – Numista - original portrait materials used
So the question i think we want answering:
How should the designer field be used. Is it exclusively for the person who designed that coin? or is it anyone who's previous designed have also been used in the creation of the coin. In the examples above I would argue the designed for Una is Wyon because his dies were actually used. Whereas the others are interpretations by someone else of an already existing design and therefore only the new designer should be credited and other can be credited in the comments section.
Thoughts, opinions and updated guidelines appreciated!
