40 reis Joannes VI , Doubt identification

Pubblicazioni di 2 • visto 63 volte

Good morning everyone and thank you for your help, I would like to bring this coin to your attention:

Apparently they look like 40reis from 1820 from Mozambique. But I have the doubt that it is some other variety (or is it fake?): diameter 30 mm thickness < 1 mm, weight 4.33g, it looks like bronze or copper.

We are not there with the weight and some details, the year is so worn that it does not seem to have been written, the characters seem more subtle compared to the photos I saw in the catalog

Do you have any comments? Thank you!

This is intriguing.

First of all, the Numista link for those who want to check it out: N#43859

This looks like a contemporary fake, there are many fake coins from this period, counterfeiting of copper coins was running wild in Brazil during the 1820's.

But faking a Mozambique coin… It's another story. Was it accepted normally because of the portuguese coat of arms?

And yet the catalog page says some specimens got a “20” countermark, something that's only possible if it was circulating in Brazil.

So it may be a brazilian counterfeit, but so far it's only a theory of mine.
