Hello and welcome everyone to MPCC IV (Most Popular Coin Contest). After the unfortunate leaving of Dptashny, I will be continuing on both the french and english forum with the 4th version of this contest.
For this contest there are some minor rule changes.
RULES:
1: Every member can enter up to one coin in each of the following categories:
A. Europe
B. Asia
C. Africa
D. North America
E. South America
F. Australia and Oceania
G. Antique and Medieval coins (Up to 1450)
H. Tokens, Medals and Fantasy Coins
2. In order to submit your coin(s), you will have to have a high quality cropped photograph, or a scan, of your coin. Cropping can be done using Photoscape, Gimp or a similar program. There must be separate obverse and reverse pictures. The pictures must have the same length and width and must be at least 400X400 PX. PM me your picture(s). In order to be in the contest, you must submit your coin before the end of February. Note that the photos and coins have to be yours and cannot be copied from other websites.
3. Voting is quite simple, every member gets one vote for every sub-round. You may vote on your own coin. Voting on the same round on the french side and the english side is not allowed
4. New rounds will be posted on a weekly basis. If this should not be possible on my side, Numista members will be informed on advance.
5. If one of the categories has much more coins added by Numista members than others, there might be two rounds posted of this category and only one of the others
6. There will be again some nice prizes up for grabs, due to the recent mishaps of the prizes for the category winners, I will be supplying most of the prizes. Prizes will be given to the category winners and to the Ultimate contest winner.
7. You may change the coin you entered at any time before the contest begins.
8. You are not allowed to enter a coin which you have entered in previous MPCC's
9. Due to previous discussions of what countries fit in which category. North America includes all Carribean and Central American countries, including Panama. Russia will count as Europe.
10. For fairness to all It would be appreciated if the coin owners would keep anonymous and not mention that they are the owner of a coin.
11. Thank you all for participating!

Suggestion: If the owner acknowledges the coin during the contest, it should be reason to disqualify the coin

Do not argue with ignorant people .. !! They will drag you down to their level, then pulverize you with experience ...
I can again donate the prize for Pacific/Oceania. I'm not sure what it is at the moment but I'm sure I can find something nice.
A question I have is may we send in coins that have won in previous years. For example, the coin that was the overall winner last year was the Panama Un Balboa. It wasn't mine, but I have one of those coins too. So can I send in mine this year, or are previous winning coins out of bounds? (Not that I'm actually going to send mine in, just giving an example to check on a ruling)
Also, can we get extra coins in one section if we don't enter in all the sections?
For example, there are 8 categories so if you enter one coin in each category you would enter 8 coins. I don't have any ancient coins or tokens so I can only enter in 6 categories. Can I enter another 2 coins in 2 other categories (i.e an extra coin in the Pacific/Oceania and South American categories) to make a total of 8 coins?
Hello Neil, to your first question sure I was thinking about doing the same. Will be posting something on the prizes soon.
On your second Id say no, one reason bein that there would be again so much more coins from Europe comparedto the rest. This time its going to be just one from each.

Perhaps put out an APB now calling for prize donations for this round, as I've said, I can donate the a Pacific/Oceania coin as the prize for that category, as that's where I'm situated and they're easy to get (I think it's nice to receive a coin from the area that you've won your prize in)
Thanks Neil that was my idea also, I think this time ill give out most of the prizes myself but will gladly accept your donation. I will defenately need a prize sponsor for antique and medieval coins as I dont have anyhow ill inform everyone hopefully before the next weekend.

Hello,
Is it possible to differentiate the Near and Middle East (Arabian Peninsula, Mesopotamia, ...) from the rest of Asia ?
Asia is so vast...
Thank you in advance,

Do we have to take the pictures ourselves or can we use pictures from dealers, auction houses, etc? I own the coins, but the pictures were taken by the coin dealers and/or auction houses. Don't want to get disqualified for something silly as this...
Cita: Muenzenhamsterthat would be cheating. i will also not go to kuenker and pay some cash just to defeat the "scrap" people are submitting and grab the prices.
maybe the jury should think of some kind of standardized parameters for our submissions.
in my oppinion its wrong. there is always heavy photoshopping included and like i mentioned there are sure sick individuals purposely going to get coins with nice pictures from the auction house just to caress their egos.
the jury should tell us how to the pictures should be made, if and how much photoshop is allowed or not and so on...
otherwise are i am allowed to submit something like that? i own that coin afterall….....
Cita: Muenzenhamsterthat would be cheating. i will also not go to kuenker and pay some cash just to defeat the "scrap" people are submitting and grab the prices.
If that is the case, then the contest should be very explicit in the rules. It is too flexible. I am certain you can submit a $300-$500 coin to trump any of the normal submissions that are sent. Is there a coin value limit? The categories are also too broad. Ancient and Medieval is lumped into one category and that is humongous!!! You are talking about the whole world prior to 1450! I know I am a newcomer here, but I think there needs to be some fairness, otherwise I can easily post multiple expensive and stellar coins and dominate multiple categories
I fully agree with you that you cant compare early medievial coins with old roman or greek coins.
Sadly the selfproclaimed main judge is somehow resistant to new improvements and is likely to repeat many mistakes from previous competitions. Last time even the organisator got fed up by the duration ( 8 Months) of the contest and went away. The best thing was the " ultimate winner" is a copy from the internet.
My wife would divorce me if I bought that coin just to win a $10 coin But I might submit several of the coins that won Best of Type on forumancientcoins.com so watch out
send a Personal Message with pictures of your coins and a link to the Numista page if possible to Apuking who is the organiser of the competition, that way he can organise the rounds.
Cita: Muenzenhamsterotherwise are i am allowed to submit something like that? i own that coin afterall….....
Well, there are two aspects here:
Stock images of coins should be OUT. The pictures that are submitted MUST be the picture of the coin you own.
Auction house images and dealer images really can not be used as you can never prove you own a particular coin. I can easily grab a stellar picture from an auction house and post it as though it was my coin.
Now, not everyone is a professional photographer, so that needs to be taken into consideration when voting. Remember, you are voting for the coin and not the photo...
Hello sorry for the late reply, im on a business trip and dont have my laptop with me. Point 2 in the rules state that the fotos must be your own and may not be copied from other internet sites or books (exeptional coins and fotos will be researched to check if not copied). For antique and medieval coins, in the past there was no extra categories for them this is the first time there will be, these are put together as there are not many on Numista who collect those and show not enough submitted coins to be separates.

That doesn't work all the time as most of us posts images of our coins on the internet. That basically means only new and previously non-uploaded coins can be entered. Is that correct?
Cita: Quant.GeekThat doesn't work all the time as most of us posts images of our coins on the internet. That basically means only new and previously non-uploaded coins can be entered. Is that correct?
No, as long as the photos are yours and of the actual coin you own then it's OK, this rule is to stop what happened last year here https://en.numista.com/forum/topic35280.html Where the pictures of the Bermuda coin that won were taken directly off the internet and the person who submitted it didn't seem to own the coin.
I'm not sure if they did this hoping that nobody would find out because they just wanted the prize, or whether they just didn't understand how the competition worked. But Apuking gave them an opportunity to prove it was their coin by asking for a photo of them holding the coin or some other proof. They never came forward.
A bit long winded, but to answer your question, if you own the coin, take new photos of it to be on the safe side, and be prepared to validate that it is your coin if it ends up winning.

That will never be a problem for me as I hate cheaters, especially those who steal other people's coin pics and post it as their own. Had a huge fallout with someone else who was stealing my coin pics a while back . I don't mind people using my pictures, but at least give credit or indicate that the picture is not theirs...
So i am not allowed to sell the coin inbetween? Considering the extremely long runtime ( 12 months) of this contest and the dynamic coinmarket it could cause some problems...
I can just see the situation now...someone posts pictures of a dazzling coin, they win the competition and then when asked to verify they own the coin they claim "Oh I used to have it, but I sold it during the competition" Yeah right!
Obvious answer.....Before the competition starts, think about whether you think you're going to sell your coin in the next few months, if so then don't enter it in the first place. If you've entered it and your coin is in the running to win then don't sell it, or wait until after the competition is completed before selling it.
Why do you guys feel you need to play the devil's advocate? If you want to enter then enter.
Question to rule #10. What if the coin you choose to submit is the numista picture with your numistaname as copyright, does this still count as unfair promotion of ownership?

It says it would be appreciated, so its not forbidden but we kindly ask you not to.

multiple lights or incidence angles, a camera that can make good pictures of small things even from a bit further away and a little angle on the coin so that you don't see the camera setting
Yep just send me the pictures, you can choose whatever category you want to have a coin in, but maximum is 1 per category. Deadline is the end of the month.

And remember folks, this competition is called the most POPULAR coin competition. not the most EXPENSIVE coin competition. It's coins with the nicest designs that will win, people don't vote for coins just because they cost a lot of money.
Someone found that out last year when they entered a battered old sovereign from Australia and it got beaten by a plain old Australian florin....just something to think about when selecting what coins you want to enter.
I'm really excited! This is the second time I'm attending a competition here, so It'll be great! LOL! The first competition was for the Numista Token, but that didn't end well, haha!
I forgot to add the numista links though, do I need to add it?
Numista links are helpfull but its ok I managed to find most coins on Numista. Some entries are coins that are not yet in the catalogue.

OK, but I can add the links with the last two entries. But I still haven't decided which coin to use for Africa, it's so hard! I am choosing between two. Can I send in both and then you decide?
Its your choice maybe the one with more attractive and uncommon design. Its for you to decide.

Yeah I know, but I like them both
I showed my gf 5 different frican coins and asked her coin to add to the competition. There were two she couldn't decide between - the same two I could shoose between. I'd really like to win the African competition, since I'm trying to get a coin from each modern (now existing) country, and I don't have Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), which seems to be the African prize.

There are not that many coins entered in the asian category so in this MPCC no unless they were minted before 1450

And also, shouldn't this contest be announced on the Home page with a small introdction and link to category for voting? In that case more people would get involved, since not everyone are searching in the forums.
