for the 20 haler coins, I kept both, because they are distinctive, you can easily say this one is KM2.1 and this one KM2.3, because the number 2 has another shape
obviously, that things happens with the edges, but also there are different KM numbers (or new coins) which possibly have the diameter and thickness almost the same like older ones, e.g. Tongan 2011 coíns and older
I try to collect 122.1, 122.2 ...
But sometimes it´s difficult to know which coin you have.
But there is a great side which shows a lot of pictures. 1 picture says really more than 1000 words... http://monnaiesetvarietes.esy.es/
I am just not sure If I should keep both 2.1 and 2.3 or just one of this 20 haleru because the are both KM # 2
Any suggestions would be great
I do collect both KM# or Y# or what ever in the versions 1.1, 1.2 etc. afterall the coins are always different.
Besides this I do also collect by mint mark, coins with the same KM# and different mintmaks as in the German and Dutch coins amoung other countries.

I collect all circulation coins ( or coins which were struck for circulation) by KM, Y, etc, and subtypes too. Also I try to find enw subtypes, which I know will be added soon to KM#.
regarding commemoratives... I try to get at least one type.
For example, if I have " world Fisheries Conference" in Copper-Nickel, Its enough for me. But if I will catch also silver one, - sure, it willnot go to the swaplist But I dont declare special hunting for silver one

Sometimes I have underKM, but Idon´t see the differences. I know where and what it is, but my eyes don´t see it.
But for example this coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2063.html
is really different. I think I blind man could see it without using hands ;-)

thes subtypes are very visible. you dont need any glasses or something else to see the difference in eagle sizes. I was little boy and didnot know what is Krause catalog, but these Zlot subtyes I had in my collection as different types of same denomination .
I collect normal circulation coins by type only. I arrange them per era and I couldn't care less about sub KM numbers. For example I don't care if a coin's metal changed from cupro-nickel to nickel plated steel, as the two are quite hard to distinguish in the first place.
I also ignore for instance the Dutch-French legends for Belgian coins and only have one language per monetary type. Same for South African coins with ever so many linguistic variants.
But there is one coin where the numista catalogue seriously bothers me:
This Polish 2 Zlote Y#80.1 & 80.2 are the cause that according to my dashboard I have 4621 coins and 4620 types. I classify the 80.1 one as the 1957-1980 era and 80.2 as the 1984-1987 era. This is why I have both.
Can someone finally change the catalogue for this?

So, silver quarter and nickel quarter for you is same? just a quarter with same design... its looks odd for me.
If there are subtypes for a KM I collect them too. So in your example of the Canadian 1 Cent, I do have both. I figure if the design change is significant enough for a sub KM# I'll take it.
There are also other annotations in the catalog that I will keep. For example: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces388.html. It has a small date year, then a design change for the date, and then there is a maple leaf on some of the 1947's.
Collecting coins in it's all diversity is as question of choice. I do really like to see the anomalies/differencies in coins that should be the same.
I'd say take a close look to the dutch Juliana 1 cents or the French 5, 10 en 20 centimes. Very addictive to collect all those diffent coins with the same KM.
Anyway what fits me doesn't need to fit others too, so make your choice!
I collect by type of the coin.
If I somehow or accidently got a coin with some small detail (mintage letter, dot, symbol, etc.) I keep it, but I do not specially look for that type of coin.
Every single coin on the world should meet its collector!
Dato, a switch from precious metal to non-precious metal I find significant enough to collect both, so I have a dime, quarter and half both compositions. It also sigifies a change in monetary conditions.

I think same is with copper VS copper clad steel
Brass VS Brass pl. steel
Brass VS al/ Bz
etc..
anyway, collecting coins is a pleasure so each of us decides for himself what to collect..
I started also with only types, then began collect subtypes. and now I sorry about coins which I once swapped out, just because they were proof , or essai ( the reason: why I need one proof coin from set if I have already whole set non-proof... same with essais )... Now I think - why??? What could happend if they were also in collection
haha but still sorry about my stupid steps in early years
