I mentioned it before in the New Countries topic, but I would like to split SAR coins off the South African listing. The South African Republic was an independent state from 1852 until 1902 when the British conquered it after a bloody and nasty struggle. After this it was merged with its ally Orange Free State (the other independent Boer state at that time) and the Cape Colony to form the Union of South Africa, which in turn lasted until 1961 when the Republic of South Africa (RSA) was declared.
The SAR had as official language Dutch and used its own currency named Pond, which was at parity with the British Pound. The Cape Colony was still using homeland British currency during that era.
There are plenty of comparable historic situations (Biafra, Katanga, Tibet, Newfoundland) that are listed as a separate country in the catalog.
One other member proposed to split also the Union of South Africa and the RSA, but that I find a bit too far stretching as RSA was just the new name with no territory changes.
I contacted Xavier but no reply. Can imagine he's pretty busy. The ref for South Africa totally agreed with me and already proposed the same idea on the forum a few years ago but no result yet.
Cetero censeo Transvaal ad catalogum numistae addendum esse
Xavier was so kind to add 'South Aftica - Boer Republics' to the country list. I just put the SAR coins in the new listing and waiting for approval of the referee.
Hopefully it will also make people more aware of the awful suffering of many Boer women and children in British concentration camps during the 2nd Boer War. Not that I'm not critical of the Apartheid policies the Boers are associated with (which was based on an ideology also put in practice in Australia and USA for quite some time) but all things have their nuance.
May South Africa prosper in the future and deal with its past in a constructive way.

Surely the issuing authority should be identified as the South African Republic or Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek since this is what appears on the coins?
Also, while we're on the subject of South Africa, what is going on in the catalogue with the George V bronze issues for example, there is a page for the KM#12 Farthing, including all the sub-types but there are also pages for the sub-types individually, KM#12.1, 12.2, etc. I know this question was raised previously and I believe at the time the consensus was for a single page to keep the catalogue as small as possible, even though my preference is actually for separate pages with clear pictures of each, but surely we should have one or the other and not both?
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
I agree, but the idea was to also place the Orange Free State trials and tokens under the same listing. That would create indeed multiple sub-listings within this 'South Africa - Boer Republics'.
If you like coins, medals and tokens with ship motives follow my new instagram account with regular updates @numisnautiker
From time to time I sell some coins on Ebay make sure to follow me @apuking on Ebay.
I agree that there should be revised structure within the South Africa section of the catalogue, hopefully the referee and Xavier will support this. Within my collection, I usually follow Krause with regard to the layout (by denomination & KM#) but I have recently reorganised my SA coinage to bring the ZAR to the front and separate them from the Union issues, here are the first couple of pages:
Also, if anyone is proposing to develop the listings for the early South African trials & tokens, I have a copy of Hern's Handbook on South African Coins & Patterns 2012 which has quite a lot of data on the patterns of Griqua Town, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape of Good Hope and I would be happy to assist with any information that may be needed.

Cita: KennyGI'll create the category. Should we do "Boer Republics" or "South Africa - Boer Republics"? I prefer the former.
While I prefer 'Boer Republics', I can imagine that people slightly less informed about South African history might prefer 'South Africa - Boer Republics'.

It would appear the SA referee might have woken from a long sleep since I have also just had a few old modification requests validated and the ZAR issues have been re-catalogued in their own section but we still have the problem of the duplicate entries for the George V bronze issues - what's happening with these?
