I create this topic to track the idea of getting statistics about our collection.
Today the pages "Your coins" show the number of coins, number of types, number of countries, number of coins to swap.
More figures could added (see suggestion from Imre below) and the history of coins in your collection.
Cita: "Imre"3) Dashboard
Well, Numista uses the term dashboard for the map, however it could be extended into various statistics, which motivate people to collect or contribute. Sexy little things, which most people would love I am sure:
- A more correct map (or more versions)
- Total weight of my collection
- Metal breakdown of my collection (e.g. 34% silver, 12% bronze...) arranged in a nice diagram.
- average weight of a coin in my collection
- blabla... easily calculatable charts and statitistics, which enthuses people.
These would significantly increase Numista "user experience" and thus the Numista loyalty and contribution level. People are mostly motivated by progress, so seeing any statistics is a great motivator to grow their collection and contribution to Numista.3) Dashboard

I would like to have the ability to download and print a list of coins I have or do not have. Then I will have the list with me when I am at a coin show or Coin store.
Thanks for a great site and for asking,
Regards, Mark
How about a way to see how my collection compares to other members? For example, I might rank high in number of types but low in number of countries. High in rarity or number of coins. Of course members would have to opt-in as not everyone will want to participate.
Thanks, Mark
Statistics, metrics and setting goals increase the loyalty to the website. I have a suggestion regarding statistics that I think might be not difficult to implement and customized-based.
---
Example. I picked up a random country: GUYANA.
There are 40 coin-types listed in Numista. I own 6 of them.
From these coins, some I had ticked the "I don´t want to get this coin" option, or are in my filters as I don´t want the coin. 10, to be precise, with the "X" symbol. Other users might tick none, 5, 20,30, whatever...
This means, in my case, 40-10, a pool of 30 coins that I want to have.
As said, I have 6, so for me it would be 6 out of 30.
Just a thought, it would be nice to have that information. Guyana progress: 6 / 30 (20%).
This shown at the global list of countries, would be a figure of how many coin-types you have by country, plus how many do you want to have according to your filters and wishes, and how far you are to reach the goal. This would help to think where to focus on getting coins, and improve the user-experience on Numista.

I like these suggestions!
The map must be updated, as least now when South Sudan has started to struck their own coins, South Sudan must be shown on the map. After all, it is an independent country.
Great we will get some improvements again!
For this topic I have 3 wishes
Except the number of coins of a country in your/my collection (like used in the map) I would like to know the completeness of my collection of a country, with the possibility of filters, like the current coin types "circulation, non-circulation, commemorative, token", etc) and (a bit more difficult I think) filters like after 1900, and without coins "I don't wish to get".
Somewhere hidden on the forum page we have a list of all Numista users, where you can see the number of coins (not types) per each user. It would be nice if number of types and number of countries would be added.
A little off topic, I would love to export my wishlist!

That would be lovely. A pre-requisite to that tough, is that first we need to know the "Numista completeness ratio" i.e., to what extent a country is fully documented on Numista. Just to give 2 benchmarks, Hungary is about 60%, Ancient Rome is below 10%.
1) increasing the maps. maybe starting with a map of 1914 would be a good start as it would indicate the colonnial system and historic Europe, giving members a chance to "colour another map". That would - of course - require removing pre-1914 items from the original maps, but it would also give folks a more appropriate picture of their collection.
2) WEIGHTS and METAL content. I'd love to know the weight of my collection, and I trust that other members would join this as well.
Also, it would be great to know the [precious] metal content of my collection, i.e. "how many grams of silver do I own.
Besides the customer experience, it would also encourage members to contribute proper weights and metal constitution of their coins, so the catalog would improve.
I like the idea of increasing the amount of maps but I've doubts about its "doability": how much maps would we need this way? Seriously there were so much map changes between different eras, years...
Just take the 20th century. Some nations splitted or merged, colonies extended or collapsed, protectorates appeared... We should need to make a map every 1-2-3 years in some periods. And what about making maps in older nations? Even it should be nice, there is no chance to have enough representative maps for all nations or territories.

Love the idea of more maps. Not only in time but also space. Depending on what people collect.
With time you can build up a good set of maps to chose from.
I'd be happy to contribute to that if you need. I can handle GIS stuff to create maps in different formats.
Just ask
Not sure though I can build up a satisfactory map of my favourite Holy Empire
Cheers, André

Cita: "neilithic"I would personally like to see the total silver weight (ASW) of my collection.
Also a breakdown of coins by grade would be good, like this:
Your collection contains 600 coins:
UNC - 55
XF - 150
VF - 195
F - 100
VG - 100
This would be a great Idea as some would have fillers that need to be replaced over time, it would be very handy to be able to scan our collection to see what needs replacing much quicker than sorting through the collection.
For example : You come across a coin for sale with little time left to buy it, checking here would be much faster.

More Maps great idea!!
Ratio on each country: for example Lithuania I have 30 of 100. Lithuania 30/100 (30%)
Because I collect only couple countries .
But if you make for example: Century Maps 1800-1899; 1900-1999; 2000-2099.
Let say I choice 1900-1999 and I see how many coins I miss from particular country in this century.
Another idea:
To ability to sort MAP from - to BY Year.
For example: you choice year from 1950 to 1980 and you see ale countries coins issued this years:
Lithuania 5/50 (10%) what mean 5 I have 50 was issued
Poland 10/40 (25%)
Germany 25/50 (50%)

I collect 1900- to date circulating non commemorative coins.
And I try to complete countries.
I know I need one more from East Timor this way to complete that goal.
Really helpful.
Awesome, are the ASW values going to be listed on the coin pages? You obviously have the capacity to do this since you have the total silver weight of the collection listed in the stats.
Okay, great, numbers are always good! Thanks!
here the first results:
I'
I'm really surprised all my coins are "only" 80kg!? I expected much more!
I didn't expected silver on number 2, so that's a pleasant surprise!
Thanks!!!
Xavier, great job! Like the new page very much! (where is the thumbs-up emoticon when you desperately need one?)
A few very minor requests:
1) Change the colour for OK button to the same blue as the top menu (tabs) background.
2) Same for the scales icon in the Weight section.
3) Is it possible to make the collection history graph a little bit taller? At least 500 per unit?
[edit] Looking at some posted screen shots, I see that the vertical scale is dynamic. In my case I see 2000, 4000, 6000... Still, would be nice to have it at least twice taller.
4) What is the row below "actual silver weight" in the Weight section?
I see from mic-w-nl's screen shot that it's supposed to be gold or platinum weight but I get no label in either Chrome or Firefox. I also don't have any other precious metal besides silver in my collection.
I think there's a bug in the weight; as far as I know I have one golden coins with 6gr of gold, the overview tells me I have 21gr of gold, or did I select wrong some other gold coins?
Improvement suggestion: adding a way to zoom on the graphics.

You can see your gold and platinum coins with the advanced search: Search for Metal = "gold" or "platinum" with Your collection = "in"
in my profile I got one more coin and one more country!? Maybe that's my Micronesia coin?
I'm not sure for the "one more coin". The difference in country count was due to a correction in the new dashboard: the country "token" is not counted. I have just modified the profile to align with this new count.
I don't know if this post goes here or on the catalog forum, but here goes:
I agree that more maps would be lovely such as perhaps one for every century, but I understand that this is something that will have to be considered in the future due to the amount of time needed to create them.
There are a couple things I would like to see done if it is agreeable to the majority and not too much work. (I am not a programmer so I have no idea if this is simple or difficult.):
1) My colleague's first language is not English. I readily know the difference between some countries such as "Austria" and "Australia", but when she learned geography in her native language, everything had a very different name. On the "Countries and Territories list, it would be helpful if when you hover over a country, it would show the continent and list the years that the country existed. 2) When I look at my collection, and pull up a list of the countries that I do not have, it is merely a dead list. Can it have the same hyperlinks as the "Countries and Territories" list? When I am searching online for the countries I don't have, it would be simpler if I could click on the country and see what Numista considers as a coin from those countries. Sometimes sellers listings online don't completely match the catalogs.

gold and platinum were all mistakes/typos in my collection, it's right now, thanks to the new statistics :-)
number of coins in my profile and dashboard are now the same!
I think it's not enough to have increased the graphic dimensions, a zooming tool remains a better way to watch it, particularly when we have very small amounts of swap coins and a big collection like me, having never registered more than 1% of swap coins

This update was amazing !!
It allowed me many things: eg. to correct some mistakes in my collection, as now the "coins" and "different coins" have different meanings, have a notion in grades and by metals and weight, which was a good surprise!
The collection history graph is really top! Love to see the evolution of my collection.
Cita: "sferreira"Specifically, what's the difference between "Coins" and "Different Coins" on the new dashboard?
I'm no expert, but I would assume it's for people that have numerous copies of the one coin, coins is all their coins, different coins is total coins minus all the duplicates?
Is it possible to add also list of coins for particular grade?
Example: I own some coins in VG quality, but wish to find better looking coin. So it's good to mark this one with "I want that coin" flag. But problem is how to find that coin in whole record. This tool would allow that.
If I were you, I would do a bit of advertisement for this new feature:
1) Announce it on the home page and ENCOURAGE members to review their collections and make sure for every single coin the weight and the metal content is given. ... and if not, INVITE them to add the relevant info, as it would help all of us to have the correct information.
2) Do the same with referees, invite them to revisit the values of weights and the appropriateness of the metal...
3) Ever thought of reserving the right for yourself to send an ANNOUNCEMENT (i.e. a pm to all members at the same time!) in order to activate them to revisit the site after leaving it in boredom or dissatisfaction or else for a while? - I think this would be a great reason to introduce this selfish method to reactivate some sleeping beauties...
Because this is a great feature, which deserves attention!
p.s. Give me some time, and I will come with some improvement suggestions as well!
No, because the whole English speaking world (with the obvious exception of America) uses kilograms. Unless it could be changed based on country (like the currency)...

Yes, it's possible to have pounds for our American friends.
With the new dashboard, I have added to options in your account settings: the preferred currency and the preferred weight unit for precious metals. The default settings depend on your country.
This is already used for the actual silver (and others) weight, which American users can see in troy ounces and US dollars.
Ken, I'm not sure how it should work for the collection weight. Should it be the avoirdupois pound, with subunit in avoirdupois ounces? e.g. "12 lb 4 oz". Or should it be fractions (12 1/4 lb) or decimals (12,3 lb)?
Can there be any confusion with using avoirdupois for the total weight and troy for the precious metal weight?

The form of 12 lb 4 oz would be best. I don't think it would be confusion with the weights of precious metals as they are in troy weights always.
Hi! I really liked the new statistics functions you have added Xavier! And I really appreciate the effort you are putting to upgrade the site while having to deal with all these requests from us!
I have a proposal (as many others did before me) for adding the completion percentages of individual countries.
I keep a database in a spreadsheet and I calculate the completion rate of each country, both for all coins and circulation coins, as I am focusing in collecting only circulation coins. Here's a snapshot of Afghanistan for example:
I also calculate the total completion percentage of all the countries (even if I'm not as interested in this number) with some other statistics that could be of interest to someone:
So my proposal is to having the statistics of each country either as
- a tool tip in the dashboard map (as mentioned by someone before me)
- as a table in the beginning of the coin list for each country (together with the information that is already given about the amount of coins in collection):
Your collection contains 1 coins from Afghanistan; 0 are to exchange.
- or having both proposals!!
But on the top of my wishlist would be adding values to the site! I think that would elevate this site to a new level!
Keep up the good work! :)

hi Stavros, looks good! maybe it's better you place this info in the new suggestion topic "completion rate of countries"
Hi, the collection statistics function is simply awesome. And there are many suggestions to expand it. I think the next upgrade should have statistics about countries or regions/continents and age.
The first could be like this from the biggest number and percentage to the smallest
Europe 60 30%
Asia 50 25%
America 40 20%
Africa 30 15%
Australia-Oceania 20 10%
Or with countries it could be similar to the setup with the types of metals. And in someone's collection french coins could account for 43% , german 21% etc...
With age we could have the mean year issue of the coins in the collection like 1976 , the range from the oldest to the newest. There could be grouping in separate historic eras, like number of coins before world war I, between world wars and after world war II. Or we could have bar charts with the number of coins in different decades, like from the 1920's 30 coins, 1930's 38 coins.
If others read this message I am sure they will have more suggestions about it.
And these statistics would give even more interesting information about one's collection.
Hi.
Thanks for you efforts.
It would be nice when enter country to have opportunity to see separately Your collection and separately coins for Swap.
And separately commemorative coins series and their completion.
for example American state quarters 25/50 50%
or Lithuania 1 LITAS commemorative 8/8 100%
or Brazil Olympic Rio 2016 1 Real 4/16 25%
Yes PashaLT, I like the idea of being able to see at a glance how complete the various series are. A graph with twin bars would be easiest on the eye.
Why stop at commemoratives? I'd like to keep track of how my collection is doing by series, or by denomination. I have a complete set of UK brass 3d's but I'm doing miserably with the silver types and groats. It would be very useful to me because of the way I get coins to be able to see which series were lagging behind. I know I can calculate this manually but for issues like UK Victoria pennies it a very confusing picture.
It would need a few adjustments to the way the catalog is set up. I've often thought that proofs should be treated as a separate series as a lot of people don't collect them and it gives a false impression of how otherwise complete your collection is. Also in the specific example you quote for US State Quarters, each is listed separately by KM # instead of putting them together as a single series. I'm sure there were good reasons for deciding to do it this way but it does seem to run counter to how other US series are handled. I'm sure it would have to be combined in order to create the information needed.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
Not sure how well this suggestion will be received, but honestly if Numista simply copied some of the collection analytics and sorting/filtering options that uCoin already has, it would be perfect.
As it stands, Numista already has the superior, open-source catalog and community supporting it, but I feel that uCoin provides me with far more useful data about my collection, which is important to me. If Numista adopted some of these features it would really be a killer app for coin collectors. I know that we can export our collections to Excel and manipulate the data that way, but that is a bit clunky and inconvenient. The data already exists in the backend so it shouldn't be that difficult to allow us to have more options for visualizing and filtering our collections from the GUI.

Yes, having a table with measurements, mintages, photo thumbnail, mintmark details would be the holy grail, with ability to share it or make it public

As someone who doesn't use uCoin, what features do they have that Numista is lacking? You gave zero examples, for some reason.
I'm not going to list every single feature that uCoin has that Numista doesn't, as I'm sure most people are familiar with it, being one of the largest coin collecting sites around. But just to give you an idea, you can see in this screenshot some of the different categories that uCoin will allow you to view different statistics about your coins. Numista allows us to view some of this data currently, but uCoin provides vastly more options.
Overall, Numista is great because its free, and allows the community to contribute to the catalog, which uCoin unfortunately does not. In terms of the overall user experience and ability to view interesting information about one's collection, there is a lot more that Numista could improve upon. Simply improving the sort functionality when viewing your collection would be a good place to start. Adding a few more fields to sort by and allowing to sort by ascending and descending order would be easy things to implement, for example.
