Hello,

One idea I have been thinking for a long time is the possibility to add more coin pictures.

I can see 2 advantages for more pictures:
  • You can store an image of your own coin, and you would be able to see all your very own coins.
  • More picture on a coin's page is interesting to identify small variants, see the different mintmarks, see different states of conservation, etc.

What do you think?
Needed this from day 1.
I like the idea very much
Referee for Pre-Euro Ireland
+1 Good idea.
Restoration addict : Verdigris Removal : Zinc White spot removal : Iron Rust Removal : Silver brooch/necklace mount Removal
+1 for varieties, mint marks, grades, etc.

But think twice about server space requirements if everyone will start uploading their own pictures. I don't think this is the high priority feature.
I like the idea, currently I've been loading variations into the comment area
This is very helpful for hammered coins since the strike can fall on different parts of the coin.
I vote for this as well - uploading your own coin images - a marvellous idea!!! :)
Thank you Xavier - that was the idea I had for my own website so it guess it would not be very useful with Numista 2.0 around. Yes, I think it is a fantastic idea and I've had it for years but I guess its happening for real on Numista which means I'm back to the drawing board. All I can tell you is that this is poised to make Numista the most popular (not that it isnt already) coin catalog on the internet. Good job!
Any news on the suggested idea of the ability to upload own images of coins for your collection? This is actually the feature I have been waiting most of all :) Are there any estimates when it is going to be implemented? Thank you!!!
I'm sorry I don't have a target date yet. Next big development will probably be enhancement of "Your Coins" page (https://en.numista.com/forum/topic43977.html). The multiple images will come later.
Thank you, Xavier so much for the answer :) Nevertheless I am looking forward to see it implemented soon and do understand that it takes a great effort and extensive preparatory work. So heads up )) And my appreciation!
I and others have been adding pictures into the comments section to show mint marks and typical die flaws chops etc

  1. You can store an image of your own coin, and you would be able to see all your very own coins.
  2. More picture on a coin's page is interesting to identify small variants, see the different mintmarks, see different states of conservation, etc.
My vote will be
1. NO.... NO for posting own coins. For what reasons? Having everyone's 5 centimes will in which way contribute to the user experience? Not to mention, Xavier, that it might kill your server (or cloud capacity) sooner or later..
2. YES.... YES, for variants, mintmarks, clarifying details, hammered coins, mint-master symbols etc...

I guess it would be the referees responsibility to judge whether the picture adds value to understand the coin or not.
We could solve the issue here to not overstress the server by the following:

users just upload images of their coins as many as they want not to Numista but to whatever they like, say a cloud or anything. Then on coin type pages Numista provides an additional field for inputting the URL for externally (not on Numista) uploaded images which Collectors can fill in and Numista will show the images on corresponding pages of User's collection but the images will come not from Numista. This way all sides will be happy :) Numista's server capacity not overloaded and every user can have his/her images shown on coin type pages. Of course this is just an idea and we need to ask Xavier whether it is possible from the technical side.
Cita: "imreh"I guess it would be the referees responsibility to judge whether the picture adds value to understand the coin or not.

I think this is enough to be sure additional pics would be useful or not. And for old coins like in Lorraine, other photos may be ueful because of multiple varieties with their own reference in only 1 book.
Administrateur du catalogue, référent de nombreuses nations antiques et de la Lorraine.
Catalogue administrator, numerous Antique nations and Lorraine referee.
I have been doing so in the comment field.

A dedicated field with additional pics would have to come with field for info: origin of the pics, why they are there (variant, mint etc) and ref#s
And would have to be a "flexible" field: when you need to illustrate a variant, the format is not always the same.

Quand l'Histoire et la Géographie se croisent sur nos pièces de monnaie ...
I support this! I think it is really necessary.

To give an idea of the needed functionality:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces189584.html

- For some coins (usually ancients) the design falls off the planchet, so you need more than one image to get the full picture.
- Some coins have variable weight / size / die alignment / planchet shape etc, so more examples can show a more complete description.
- Some coins are so rare that we will never get enough users to put in prices paid to get a good idea of the value of the coin. In this case, having auction prices can help.

It gets more complicated when we want to record small variations:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces195157.html
Here, for each design variety we should ideally be able to add several examples, for the reasons listed above.

Any feedback welcome! But with the current format, it's hard to keep the layout neat and consistent. (see some of the Polish coins for example - great effort by the way)

Best
strato
Very good idea.
I wish to see this feature soon
I find the additional photos already added to be invaluable, especially those illustrating varieties. A picture really is worth a thousand words when you're trying to find out, for example large date vs small date, but you don't have any other coin to compare it to. I've found many examples of coins passing through my hands with a significantly enhanced value because I was able to easily tell the difference thanks to Numista. Needless to say I'm more than grateful to those members and referees who have put in such a great effort into making Numista the outstanding resource for numismatists worldwide.

I only hope that all the hard work won't be simply copied and pasted into competing websites. (;0
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

I do agree on the need of this one, right now when I need to check the design of a determined year I go to UCOIN and I guess I am not the only one ...

I still use UCOIN for the exact same reason and that'sa pity …

Too much room needed for nothing. Please use the comments sections for variants. Why would we need the images of the same coin multiple times?

I think it may be interesting feature for some medieval or ancient coins where we may have some different variants of the same Numista types… Also it may be an option to add pictures to year lines. But comment section is also possible for showing the differences

Sometimes issues from different years can differ quite a bit also you have proof that a year exists.

As promised in a different Thread:  https://en.numista.com/forum/topic140945.html#p1129413 , this is a mock-up of what I envision for Numista's website in the future.

After you do an item search and select the item in question, it will take you to a page shown below.  This page has either three tabs or buttons on its name:  Attributes, Gallery, and Talk.  It is up to the Referee to enable the Gallery and Talk page.

The Gallery Page has a Search Filters functionality and “Photo View” or “Photo with Details  View”    The Photos only shows the Obv, Rev, Copyright Image information, Numista #, weight, diameter, and date.   This layout was inspired by Oswal Antiques.

If you click on the image, it will get bigger and encompass the screen it will then show past Auction information along with Special Notes.   It would be sweet to be able to add active links that will take you to the auction website showing the item as well.

To see the Talk Page view this thread: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic64065.html

This mock-up does not go into the itty gritty - this is just a birds-eye view from looking down per se.  So tell me what you think. I look forward to the comments.

It's now possible to add multiple examples of a type in the catalogue 🎉

Some examples of N#302449
Example of a chopmarked N#18852

This will be nice to illustrate different varieties, conservation states, alterations, fake items, strike qualities, strike areas, etc. and simply more examples.

The examples bring not only more pictures, but also additional data like weight, size, axis and archeological context.

A preliminary guide for referees has been published: https://en.numista.com/help/how-do-referees-validate-examples-208.html

We will adjust based on usage.

Stato cambiato a implementato (Xavier, 25 Gen 2024, 15:33)

Can we add cosponsoring degrees to the die rotation?

1h | 30° | ↑↗

2h | 60° | ↑↗

3h | 90° | ↑→

4h | 120° | ↑↘

5h | 150° | ↑↘

6h | 180° | ↑↓ (Coin orientation)

7h | 210° | ↑↙

8h | 240° | ↑↙

9h | 270° | ↑←

10h | 300° | ↑↖

11h | 330° | ↑↖

12h | 0° | ↑↑ (Medal orientation)

A possibility would also to replace 12h by zero hour and move it to the top: 0h | 0° | ↑↑ (Medal orientation)

Looks a bit odd but 360° die rotation or a Zero following a 330 does too and being one of the most common ones you would not need to scroll all to the bottom.

Are there also plans to be able to select a representative picture for each year line from the ones available?
Maybe something like this or similar function where when you click on the icon the picture enlarges like on the page main picture.

I think the view is bugged on mobile:

Master Coin Referee
Coin referee for CRI, GTM, HND, NIC, PAN, and SLV.

Revisor principal de monedas
Revisor de Numista para monedas de CRI, GTM, HND, NIC, PAN y SLV.

Slava Ukraini and Free Palestine!

Die rotation
I rarely see rotation in degrees to describe die rotations, and neither 0h for medal orientation. I believe the current display is fine.

Pictures in the year line table
Yes, we will add a way to see pictures for each line of the year line table in the future.

Mobile view
We will fix this.

I translating this to Spanish…

I see the word used in English is “example”, and in French is “exemplaire”. I will use the French word, in Spanish: “ejemplar”.

According to WordReference, (FR) examplaire can translate to English as “specimen” (I think in better than “example”, but I am not an expert English-speaker!).

We chose the word “example” rather than “specimen” in English because “specimen” can have other meanings in numismatics (a specific finish or some sort of trial or presentation coin) and we wanted to avoid ambiguity.

True!

In Spanish we have “ejemplar” and “espécimen”, more or less synonyms,

  • (ES) “ejemplar” can be used like (FR) “exemplaire”
  • (ES) “espécimen” = (EN) “specimen” (e.g.  your example links, or a banknote specimen)

I found this in English, maybe it can help: example vs sample

Would this also feature minor variations found on coins such as privy marks?

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Yep and considering the addition of images for each yearline (Which has been discussed before) that might be the correct place to have the images of the privy marked coins.

@dzmitry.huletski @Xavier  So I think I found a pattern all coins after 1923 (i.e. 1924 to 2024) in Egypt have the same issue, I can not upload pictures as I posted in the video above,  unlike earlier coins, hope this help.

Thank you, that helped a lot! I fixed the issue with picture upload.

Thanks for this new feature!
I wanted to add the variants as comments in the new dedicated section to this token but there are only the sources for the museums. Can we also add other Numista-authorised websites?

Unless I've misunderstood the purpose of this new section.

I select that but the list of Numista-authorised websites are limited to museum

@Basteros then you have not selected ‘Individual collection’ and you are clicking around the Institution drop down.
You first have to upload your pictures, otherwise you can't select your source anyway.

@Idolenz Thanks I must just be tired 😅

So I've managed to enter the varieties, but is there any way of translating the comments?

I do not know, I only can edit the Spanish translation, but I see the English translation and “specimen” is used in some texts of EN-US (in EN-UK is used "example").

Thanks for reporting it. I removed the word “specimen” from the U.S. English translations.

With this new feature we can now completely get rid of the year line blockage overused in some countries.

@Xavier

For the sake of proximity with the date lines, wouldn't it be better to put the "example of this type" section before the "get this coin" section?

Are you planning to add an option for translating comments in the future?

Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno

Another thing I think could be improved is the legibility of the information. If the image source or the comment are too long, it takes up all the space, and the important information is hidden behind 'see more'.

If you want to compare all the variants quickly, it's complicated to see them at a glance. In the end, it's easier to see the variants in the comments of the page, and the new section doesn't really serve any purpose.

The section for examples is a way to better illustrate the coin types, including all possible varieties, but it's not a way to document varieties. For the moment, the recommended way to document varieties remains the comment section.

I would like to make a comment regarding this:

Scope. All examples are welcome. Examples can be used to illustrate different varieties, conservation states, post-mint damages, chopmarks, fake items, or just different examples of the same type.

For fake items I am not really sure this is the best way to proceed as the material can be different, I think this idea of @Polette cover better the need.

Because appart from being a problem for collectors, fakes are also collectibles objects.

Always look on the bright side of life!

Just a couple of question:

1) Is it reasonable to copy pictures from “Past sales” section to “Examples of the type” section? Shall they be automatically copied there by Mr. Robot?

2) Would it be possible to add a function of authomatic copy of pictures to “Examples of the type” section in case of proposal to change a main picture of the catalogue page?

I'm still not fully clear about how to handle the overlap between the functionality for past sales and the examples. For the moment, I don't see any benefit in copying past sale records into examples. The coin page shows both anyway.

It was done, 👌but HTML br tags are displayed:

This will be solved in the next release.

We need split the label of number of hours in axis of examples.

For example, see this page https://en.numista.com/catalogue/examples/new.php?type=120857, Measurements section, Axis field.

This field is a select box with options whose text is controlled by this label:

  • example_edit>axis_o_clock • %s stand for a number between 1 and 12, representing the axis orientation
    (EN-UK) %s h
    (EN-US) %s o'clock
    (ES) %s horas
    (FR) %s heures
    (GE) %s Uhr

In English is valid, and I do not know in German. But in Spanish and in French is not correct “1 horas” / “1 heures” (must be “1 hora” / “1 heure”).

We need two labels: one with %s = 1 and other with %s = [2-12]

I might be getting old and stupid, but how do you enter your images to a year line. I still haven't figured it out😵

At the bottom of the page you click “Register an example of this type”.

Thanks a lot, I have already tried, and it seems to function (if validated).

What happens, when two types will be merged (India km48.1 and 48.2)?

The new type will have two lines (or more), one with km48.1 and other with km48.2, and the examples will be moved to the correct line. This task is done by admins.

Also, if an example was associated with an incorrect line or type, you can edit the example and submit the correction.
