I want to buy this coin.  Can someone tell Me what it is worth.

The book price is $12 US (1894 to 1900 inclusive), but if you were to sell it to a dealer you would get about half that, at an auction who knows. If there are two people at an auction that both want it the price may go up, if no one there particularly wants it, it will realise very little.

Book price valuations are just a guide, handy for ascertaining the relative value of coins, and as a guide to average retail prices. So if someone is offering you this coin for well over $12 US you may think twice about buying it, well below $12 go for it, between $10 and $15 would be a fair price to pay retail.

You may also need to consider its scrap silver value. It is made of solid silver (92.5% pure), and the price of silver may influence the value from a scrap perspective.

Sorry, didn't realise you were in South Africa. I thought you were in the USA, hence the values in $US. I expect you can convert anyway. Of course some coins are far more expensive in some countries than others.

It is all good.
The chap wants R100 for the coin.
So it is close on par with the exchange rate.

Just had a look at Tony Clayton's website and his price guide says:

VF - £8 to £15
EF - £30 to £40

With the exception of the '94 which comes in a bit higher

These prices are largely backed up by what has been selling (completed listings) on eBay UK, although some have been going a little bit cheaper
