Of all the US coins, I think this is the least liked. Well no more fan fare, here she is
We all know her 1979 P near and far mint marks
But that is far from all of her mystery's. Sorry that was a near joke. Here are the near and far mint marks for D and S. 1979 D near and far mint marks
near far
And the near and far 1979 S
near far
And with the mint marks you have filled and clear. Here are the circulating S marks clear and filled
clear filled
I wonder how many people have a filled S and not a D in there collection. I have found ghosting to with this year. Do you have anything else odd with this year?
yours daryl
Edit - if you did not see, the mint marks are different sizes too
It will be interesting to see how they will handle this one. In the catalog they only have the 1979 P near and far.
This is one of many coins I hoard, why iam not sure. May be it is no one likes them.
I recently got a brand new Whitman Classic album still in the cello wrapper for $1 at the fleamarket so I'm going to force myself to like them, at least for as long as it takes to fill it! Fortunately it doesn't include the regular varieties but it does include the two types of proof. However it's only two pages in total and the bottom half of the 2nd page is left empty, perhaps for this very reason. Maybe I'll make an exception to my "no errors or minor varieties" rule and fill up the album. It would at least make it a more substantial endeavor.
Do you have any spare varieties in MS type condition you feel like swapping? I'd be very happy to put this old bird to bed with a single stroke. I'm missing a few regular dates too but I don't know which ones. Because I didn't have an album for them I'd got into the habit of putting them into small plastic bags then all together into one larger bag and now I can't find it. I think Miss Abby might have "liberated" it but she swears not. Of course she also swears she didn't eat all the chocolate ice cream despite her looking like Al Jolson and the empty container being under her bed.
Bad subject, insipid design, and a hatchet faced old feminazi staring back at me.... it's hard to find any love. Same with the Ike dollars, I have a few but it's just.... yawn.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
I will have to look Phil. If I have them they are yours. Yes they are like an ugly three legged hungry cat you find by the road. And for some reason you bring home.
Yes, its chief failing is that it is too close in appearance and size to the quarter. I think it was originally planned to be multisided, which would have helped distinguish them by feel, but they ended up making it round to work better in vending machines.
Nowadays they are even more of an awkward coin, because they still circulate with the more recent brass-clad dollars which people are more familiar with these days, and so they are even more likely to be mistaken for a quarter by a cashier!
I tend to use the golden dollars for small purchases but reserve any SBAs that I acquire for vending machines and self-service supermarket checkouts, etc.
Of course, all dollar coins since at least the Eisenhower dollar have been generally unpopular. It all comes down to the fact that the government refuses to retire the $1 bill (mostly due to the currency paper lobby, although basic fear of change plays a role as well). Until that happens, dollar coins are unlikely to circulate much.
It is a horrid coin. But the size is just an excuse. The US quarter is comparable in size to the nickel, as the SBA dollar is comparable in size to the quarter.
No one wanted this design. The original design for this harkened back to the day of early US designs...a flowing hair dollar. This was just a political design.
I still wish we would have a dollar coin over a paper dollar. When I think how much the value of a dollar has fallen, I am really shocked that we still make a paper dollar, two dollar, or 5 dollar bill.
Library Media Specialist, columnist, collector, and gardener...
I am amazed guys how much you hate this coin. Indeed it's not the best design but think about others with worst design like this coins. Look here lack of inspiration or just simple design:

and I don't know of what kind they are! I will have to set up the documentions first and then compare them to my coins.
The size relation to the quarter was a complaint I often head back when they first were released. I know on more than one occasion I received one in change from a convenience store clerk who thought it was a quarter.
Hello worth
Yes if I remember right they got the nickname "Carter quarters" After president Jimmy Carter. Who was president at the time they came out.
