This is far from an original idea and has been suggested several times. Perhaps now is the time to implement it.
I believe that being able to draw a member's attention to a forum topic would be a great improvement in the functionality of the site and help to bring the forum in particular out of the last century. I reckon it would be mostly useful in the Coin ID and Swaps and Trades section to alert of fellow collector to a topic of known interest. I'd love to be tagged whenever the subject of Victorian coppers crops up.
Can we "git a hell yeah" y'all?
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
I personally would like to see a tagging system I have seen and still use in php forums. it simply works using the exact members name with @ before their name.
e.g.
I have some great farthings that @pnightingale would like as much as I do.
This will then give you a notification when you log in. Also included is a notification if someone quotes you in any thread, and also a Like/Dislike notification from another plugin that is under every post made. I will take some screenshots to show what I mean. It would give a sense of familiarity with each numista member.
+1 on this from me.
Restoration addict : Verdigris Removal : Zinc White spot removal : Iron Rust Removal : Silver brooch/necklace mount Removal
Cita: "Jarcek"Me likey. But I see we have much more pressing matters...
But it would help a lot when trying to get the attention of other members. Say a topic where a certain person is needed, like a ID or even a page request.
Chat would eliminate painful waiting times via the PM system. This should not be complicated to do and is easily installed within a few hours. But of course I do not know the Numista structure which may be more complex than simple PHPBB3.
I am going to build a forum to test things like this for how long and complex it is to install them.

I know this idea is quite old… but it has now become technically feasible, so I'm considering more in details whether and how to implement it.
It would work similarly to other messaging systems: you type @ and the name of the user (the editor would help auto-completing the name).
When someone is tagged this way, they will see a notification on Numista. You could also opt to receive the notification by email, similar to the current forum reply notification emails.
This functionality could be used to draw the attention of someone in a forum discussion (an expert in some coinage who could help for an identification, a referee, someone you reply to, etc.)
Before implementing it, I would like to get your opinion: Do you think it can be useful? Do you fear it could be abused in some manner?
I think this would be a nice feature as long as we have a tool to curb misuse. Like members losing the ability when abusing the feature (but I think this would be more complex then I can imagine) or receivers being able to turn off notifications in case of abuse until the spammers are dealt with.
Maybe have the number next to the forum selector and the number linking to something like the forum search: Forum (X)
"See my notifications" should be now available for translations (label 'notifications>forum_link');
Translated to Spanish!

Read notifications should automatically disappear after 30 days;
Ok. I saw and translated.
If we have many notifications, this message at the bottom is not view, perhaps can be moved below the page title (similar to page “My modification requests”)?

‘notifications>reply’ is used for the notification itself:
Sorry, I do not see this link in that page. When is it shown?
Edit: I see now.
On the other hand, I confirm: when I visit a notification it is not marked as viewed:
I click in the notification,
the text with link change to non-bold,
the link opens,
but
the red number next to the “Forum” menu remains and
when I revisit the page "Forum notifications", the notification remains in bold (as unviewed).
Edit: it works now.

I thought this only gives me a notification when someone @s a post with my name. I didn't get a notification with the intial post of Dmitry but two from this thread without my tag and another thread
The new notification page contains both notifications of forum replies (which previously existed only as an optional email) and notifications of mentions.

Now I understand this label:

I got a notification when the original tagged post was quoted, is this expected? the person who quoted didn't mention me in their reply so it was a bit strange.

Me too. 😮

It seems that this is a duplicate functionality, because on the "Topics I posted in" page threads with new replies are shown in different color.
Also, confusingly, the notifications can't be turned off even one-by-one. I'm getting them even when the button with a bell in the relevant thread is turned off:
You have not muted the thread if the symbol has a bell with a slash.
Click on it and you will get a notice and a bell without a slash.
Numista will not send you notification emails for replies to this topic. You can deactivate notifications for all forum topics in your account settings.
So the only way I can avoid getting these annoying notifications is to not write on the Forum? Ok, suits me.
Nope: this is one way, but not the only one. Another way (better from my perspective) is simply to click on the bell below the threads where you dont wish notifications :-)
There are two possible ways to display it. Either depict the current status or the wished status of Muted/Unmuted, the second modus was chosen and when you hover over the button it gets explained (obviously not going to happen if you are a phone user, but I am not so fine for me 😋).
