Much like they do in Krause and for the benefit of those viewers who are not particularly interested in Patterns, they can kind of detract from the serious circulation coinage collector who might be trying to build up a type set. My proposal (and I am volunteering to do the work, if the suggestion gains approval) is to provide two sections for Patterns, one at the end of pre-decimal issues and another after decimal issues. What do you think (and if this suggestion is approved then it could be rolled out across other countries)?

Frankly, I also interested in this issue. The Krause has a large list of trial / patterns and restrikes for the Russian Empire. But I think that these coins can interfere in our catalog near circulation coins. Perhaps, indeed we should create a separate partition for patterns?
Are we talking about all those really interesting Victorian pattern pieces, produced by highly skilled engravers to very exacting standards, which can form a very worthwhile collection in their own right? If so then yes, I'd like to see them included as they are numismatically significant. Perhaps we could change the batting order a little so that Pound Sterling and Pound Decimalised appear at the top and the Conders etc. lower down... is this possible?
Now if you are talking abut these grotesque numismatic abominations being peddled on eBay and elsewhere as "retro patterns" typically pre-Victorian fantasies which were freshly made last weekend in some Asian sweatshop, then no. Put them with Big Bob's Car Wash & Antique Emporium Worldwide, Inc tokens where they belong.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Phil, I can assure you we are not talking about modern re-strikes. With Mark and I at the helm, you can rest assured there is no place for those tokens in the UK catalogue.
The Patterns referred to will typically have a 'Pn' catalogue reference and you are right, there are some beautiful pieces which have been created by some of the finest engravers and mintmasters.
These pieces do have a rightful place in the catalogue and there are many of them already listed but I don't believe they should be in the main body of the 'circulation' coinage.
I would like to create something similar to Krause so that you start with the main body of regular coinage and at the end of those listings will be the section for Pattern Strikes.
The search function will be unaffected as they will still reside within the UK catalogue but when scrolling through the pages they will not clutter up the main sterling section but have their own section at the end.

I am pleased to report that, with the support and assistance of the Numista team, the changes as proposed have now been implemented, including the re-ordering of the sections so that the pre-decimal 'circulating' sterling issues appear at the beginning of the UK catalogue. Now to get to grips with those bullion issues ...
