Ok all you £1 coin collectors out there, let's get to the bottom of this issue once and for all and end all the speculation. "What's the big question?", I hear you ask well, let me ask you this:

DOES THIS COIN CIRCULATE OR WAS IT ONLY EVER ISSUED IN BU AND PROOF SETS?

From what I can make out, it is generally accepted that the 2016 issue was only in sets so would the 10 members who are showing the 2016 circulation issue in their collection please either show pictures here or remove their tick from the box in the year line so that it can be deleted.

There is a little less certainty about the 2015 issue. As the Numista listing says, until recently the Royal Mint website recorded a 2015 mintage figure of 62,475,640, although there was some doubt as to the accuracy of this figure. However, having checked the RM site this morning, there is now no 2015 data for the 5th portrait Royal Shield, only a figure of 129,616,985 for the 5th portrait Royal Arms and I have my doubts about this.

There are 49 members here on Numista who are showing the 2015 circulation issue in their collection. Would at least one (or preferably more) of these members please show us pictures of their 2015 coins from circulation (at an angle in front of a mirror would be ideal) in order that we can clear up this query and be confident in the data we provide in our catalogue.

Thanks very much in advance for anyone who can assist with this particular mission and happy collecting :)

I think it would be worth sending a message to "owners" of the coin as high percentage of them might never ever come to forum.
My opinion is that the 2015 issue is as well as 2016 non-circulating, set-only, with 2015 Royal Coat of Arms being a substitute for both years.

Yes, that had crossed my mind but it is a large number of messages to send. I will contact one of the team to request the names of the members concerned.

Rich, 2015 shield 5th portrait was a circulation issue yes I have one in my twin portraits collection !
Thanks Mark, I had a feeling it did circulate but it seemed odd that the RM issued that and the Royal Arms in 2015 and both as business strikes. And when they withdrew the mintage figures from their website, well that just muddied the waters even further! Btw, what's your twin portraits collection?

According to my friend, C.H.Perkins (runs http://www.checkyourchange.co.uk/ and http://www.predecimal.com/ sites and issues "Collectors' Coins - Decimal Issues of the UK" catalogue) the 2015 Royal Shield one pound is non-circulating issue.

Mark, it could be that you have got it because someone spent the set-only 2015 Royal Shield pound being afraid of it getting worthless as new one pound coins are coming in. And most probably it was someone from the family of a collector.

no probs. My Twin portraits collection is a little less exciting than it sounds and that was the first time I've called it that ! Just the coins I plucked from circulation in 2015/16 of the 4th & 5th portraits all dated 2015.

I'll have to check but I'm sure I've got two one for me and one for Phil, which I still haven't managed a 2nd Royal Navy for so I can send them too him ! But I'm sure that I had more too, they're long gone though.
One more member has got in touch so the number of 2016 business strikes is now down to 6 ...

Edit: ... and now down to 5 ...

Time to revive this topic, good people. We have successfully cleared the 2016 circulation year line from the catalogue and now we are addressing the 2015 circulation question.

I have sent messages to 39 of the 48 members who are showing this coin in their collection but in doing so I have reached my maximum limit for PMs in one day.

So to those that have already responded, thank you for your replies and comments, and for those that haven't yet responded, please check you inbox and your collection.

We are down to 43 members showing this coin already but it will be interesting to see if anyone actually has a circulated 2015; it doesn't seem too likely.

Just by way of a quick update, I have sent messages out to the other 9 members that I couldn't message yesterday. Of those that have responded so far, they have confirmed data entry errors, either 5th portrait Royal Arms or 4th portrait Royal Shield, and the number showing the 2015 circulating issue is now down to 34.
