Can we have "Currency" below "Country" in Advanced Search? thanks
It doesn't have to be connected to country field. Having a full list of currencies loaded (regardless of country selected) is fine, since some countries use shared currencies.
But if you want to setup further filters, like display only value 0.01 to see all 1-eurocent coins only, this will no works anymore (it works for some values but not for all; I tried 10 euros and it displays 10 euros and 10 eurocents too).
I just realized that this “currency filter” works also for other currencies (eg. noble, angel, crown, pound, sovereign for IOM), so this can help with the problem but definitly not resolve it completly if we want to filter currency and specific value.
Yes, this helps but also not always. Your query is Ok for 10 euros but if you try with 10 eurocents → 0.10 and lettering “euro” it display also Gibraltar 10p (Europort). So anyway, adding currency to the filter would be helpfull in more complex searches but until this is done we can try to work it around in my or your way.
This works only in English, but not in the other languages.
The denominations of euro cents use “euro cent” in English, and this works searching for “euro”. But other languages do not use “euro” in the name of the euro cents (for example, “centimes” in French, “céntimos” in Spanish).

What about having a common select box for currencies and denominations? You could either select a currency or select a specific denomination within a currency, without any ambiguity about the denomination spelling.

There is a use case that I do not know how we could do: Search currencies shared by more than one country, or with the same name (e.g. euro, ecu, dollar).
I do not know if the main search field could read currencies and denominations in the language of the interface, or, a better option, if this new field "Currency" could be a combo box (with a select box of currencies/denominations, and a text box where type a text that searches for currencies/denominations in the language of the interface)
For example, I write “dolar” in the Spanish interface and the system returns all the objects with the text “dolar” in the names in Spanish of the currency/denomination.

We added two new fields for currency and denomination.
Depending on whether you selected an issuer or not, the selector for currency will either show all the currencies or only the currencies from the selected issuer.
The field for denomination becomes available once you select a currency.
It will help with the limitations of the previous search field for ‘face value’, which was ambiguous. We still keep the field ‘face value’ for the transition period.

This design was not possible since it would be unusable if we want to search without selecting an issuer.

With that update, new problems come:
If in the future the field “Face value” will be eliminated, how will be possible for example to search for “1 Rupee” and show results of all rupee issuers? Ex India, Pakistan, Nepal, Seychelles, etc..
If I want to search for Dollar in “Currency” field and I want US, I have to scroll to the bottom of the lost for US because all other fantasy issues Dollar or etc come up, I suggest that in the currency list to be shown just the issuers I select in “Types” selector under search bar, for example me, I have slected those and the “Dollar” list should be shrunk to
- Common Circulating Dollar Coins
- Commemorative Circ Dollar Coins
- Common circulating Dollar notes
- Comm. Circulating Dollar Banknotes
Otherway, it will be so hard to use the new feature.
Later edit:
I also suggest allowing to search in the list for “USD”, “RUB”, “XAF”, etc.
When types are selected only those currencies and denominations should be visible. In the example below, I'm seeing denominations that are on tokens etc. I don't want to have to see a huge list of denominations.
But I see a problem when the same currency is shared by different issuers.
Example: Catalan Pound is only one currency, used by many issuers. I think the system create a different currency for each issuer. The options in the currency selector box have these “currencies” (actually currency + issuer):
Create currencies without relationship with issuers. For example: Calatan Pound, Pound sterling, First Irish Pound. Here is necessary the full name (with “surname”).
Associate each currency with their issuers. For example: Calatan Pound with its 31 issuers.
Now a “currency” (actually currency + issuer) have these fields:

I did the setting for the Catalan pound. Feel free to report other cases that need the same setting.

I think merging the Europ currencies, just like was done with Euro, is also a good idea. It is also a common (fantasy) currency.
Same for Xeros currency.
That will also make the lists shorter.

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!
I also just had trouble using this new functionality when trying to record coins in the thaler and florin systems which where shared by many european states in the 18th-19th centuries. When you know for sure the denomination but not the issuer, the new functionality does not help because trying to identify the right issuer in the currency list is impossible.
I ended up by researching with the basic criteria: composition, size, weight, inscriptions and date.
edit: I did not see that the face value was still active. It worked very well to retrieve my coins :
criteria: face value : ¼ thaler, date: 1740 => 9 results, 2 of them pretty similar for CAROLUS VI, mine is for Tyrol County
criteria: face value 30 kreuzer, date 1750 => 2 results, one for Austria Empire, the other for Hungaria, both for FRANCISCVS I, mine is the hungarian one.

Also if I want to search for Vietnamese Dong, If I write Dong, nothing will appear in Currency tab because D is not recongised as Ð
I did some playing around, and i found that if you select a country, then all the different currencies will show for that country in the box. So no need to type out the currency in the box.
But this doesn't work when you select the whole country that says “(section)”. You need to select a specific place.

There are cases when the issuer is not selected and the currency must be written. For example, shared currencies between two or more issuers (Euro, ECU, United States Dollar, Catalan Pound, Xeros…).

I understand that the face value field is still useful for fuzzy search where the currency is not known. We will keep it for the moment.
Hi!
When you write “for the moment”, do you mean there are plans to remove it in the future?
I think face value is very useful in many cases:
* A new member can find information more easily: not everyone knows the currency of every country, or may not even be able to easily identify the country.
* Old or worn coins: the face value can be one of the few hints to identify a coin.
* Some countries (like Brazil) changed their currency very often… now I can search easily. What about after?
I understand that the face value field is still useful for fuzzy search where the currency is not known. We will keep it for the moment.
The search for “dong” is fixed.
I was worried to see this evolution completely integrated, but you are coming back to it and that reassures me.
As said above, when you try to identify an old coin as a denarius that was used in so many kingdoms in feudal times or, closer to our times, a pfennig or groschen used in many places in Europe between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, you don't know in advance where it was issued, who was the issuer and therefore the currency. Even in modern times, we sometimes read the face value of coins that we don't know or remember the monetary system in which they are expressed. There are many more such examples where the catalog is used without knowing the currency, because not all of us are historian and/or numismatic experts. The use of a hierarchy to correctly specify a face value is perhaps appropriate for modern currencies because one can quite easily remember them, but it does not seem to me to be compatible with all the complexity that history has left as an imprint in space, time and issuers on monetary systems.
From my point of view, keeping the face value field is therefore a wise decision, many thanks for that @Xavier .
I’d like to point out a couple of issues I had with the currency and denomination fields:
N#414099 I can’t filter for this coin’s denomination. Face value of 11 finds it.
The filter combination Fourth lev (Bulgaria) and Denomination of 1.95583 returns all(?) coins of the fourth lev instead of just the specified denomination ones (N#26138 and N#40352) unlike the correctly working face value filter.
Additionally, I find it counterintuitive in the case of Bulgarian lev to sort the currency alphabetically, as it results in an ordering of First, Fourth, Second, Third lev. I understand why this choice has been made globally for the field, could there be an elegant solution for this edge case?

I agree it's confusing. I changed the order to: issuer name, not exonumia currency, date.

You are correct, it works under Euro (Eurozone)! Under Euro (Austria,…) it doesn’t…
The duplicate Euro currency was a mistake. Now they are shown together.
There are problems with the denominations of the Catalan Pound. I do not understand. At first, the high values did not work, then only one of them did not work, and now... they are the low values that do not work!
