I've brought this up before, but the coins of Ceylon - Kandy: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ceylan-1.html#devise2183

Are very different from the rest of the coins in the Ceylon section of Numista (the Dutch and British colonial issues), which are what I signed up to referee for. They deserve to be their own issuer in my opinion, as putting them with Sri Lanka would yield the same problem as I have now. No catalogue I have access to contains info on these coins, or houses them along with the colonial Ceylon coins.

There are various names for Ceylon and the kingdoms that issued those coins, such as the Kingdom of Jaffna (1215-1624), or the Kingdom of Kandy (1469-1815); so I think an umbrella term 'Sinhalese Kingdom(s)' would be most appropriate for this new issuer, until someone with greater knowledge of Sinhala coins can come along and become referee for Sri Lanka and this new issuer (I'm not letting Ceylon go, not after I spent hours getting the Tamil and Sinhala lettering on the colonial issues as accurate as I could :`).
Bumping this thread from ages ago; this must be the fifth or sixth time I've requested a new "issuer" be made for the Kingdom of Kandy (pre-colonial Ceylon). The Massa coins of the pre-16th century Ceylon kings do not belong with colonial Dutch and British issues.

A few months ago Nepal was divided with it's medieval coins being the issuer "Nepal - Ancient" (or Lichhavi Kingdom), why can't we do the same for Ceylon?
Added to agenda of next meeting for discussions.

Thank you! :O
Being honest I had forgotten to add it for discussion...my bad :(

PS: Nepal reorganizing is not completed yet but should be soon ;)

Have you researched in Mitchiner, regarding the Kandy Kings?

No, not really, I just looked it up; to be honest even without any catalogue reference I was still able to add about a dozen Massa coins of the 10th to 15th centuries into the catalogue here, though I'm sure there are still more issues missing.

Quant.Geek's collection and posts on Numista were a really good reference point, so shout out to him.

I have a small book on the Kandy Kings, but my library is still in boxes from the Chicago to Texas move.

Looking at Amazon descriptions, Mitchiner's "Oriental Coins and Their Values, Volume 3 of 3: Non-Islamic States and Western Colonies AD 600-1979" indicates that coins of Ceylon are in Part I and Part 2 of that volume. (Many people are aware of his "World of Islam", which is volume 1; fewer are aware of the other two volumes.)

I am aware that some of Mitchiner's data has been expanded/changed/superceded over the years, but it can still be a good starting point. He also has some good data on ruling dynasties, as I recall.

(If you are a member of ANA, you may be able to borrow the book from the ANA library. Postage both ways would be cheap, compared to the $160+ cost of the book.)
Kingdom of Kandy is now alive!
