As the title says.

That is the name used in the Krause catalogue, and on NGC holders.
And official name was?

British North Borneo, as the map says.

Technically 'the State of North Borneo' or 'the Crown Colony of North Borneo', but I think changing the name to British North Borneo as it appears on some of their coins will not confuse anybody.

By the way, it should be changed to 'Bornéo du Nord britannique' in French.
Hi ,

a split !

Some of the coins were "British North Borneo"

and others were
"State of North Borneo"

and here is what Wikipedia says:
North Borneo (also known as the State of North Borneo)[2] was a British protectorate located in the northern part of the island of Borneo. The territory of North Borneo was originally established by concessions of the Sultanates of Brunei and Sulu in 1877 and 1878 to a German-born representative of Austria-Hungary, a businessman and diplomat, von Overbeck.
Overbeck had recently purchased a small tract of land in the western coast of Borneo in 1876 from an American merchant Joseph William Torrey, had promoted the territory in Hong Kong since 1866. Overbeck then transferred all his rights to Alfred Dent before withdrawing in 1879. In 1881, Dent established the North Borneo Provisional Association Ltd to manage the territory, which was granted a royal charter in the same year. The following year, the Provisional Association was replaced by the North Borneo Chartered Company. The granting of royal charter worried both the neighbouring Spanish and Dutch authorities and as a result the Spanish began to stake their claim to northern Borneo. A protocol known as the Madrid Protocol was signed in 1885 to recognise Spanish presence in the Philippine archipelago, in return establishing the definite border of Spanish influence beyond northern Borneo. To avoid further claims from other European powers, North Borneo was made a British protectorate in 1888.
North Borneo produced timber for export; along with agriculture this industry remained the main economic resource for the British in Borneo. As the population was too small to effectively serve the economy, the British sponsored various migration schemes for Chinese workers from Hong Kong and China to work in the European plantations, and for Japanese immigrants to participate in the economic activities of North Borneo. The starting of World War II with the arrival of Japanese forces however brought an end to protectorate administration, with the territory placed under a military administration and then designated as a crown colony.

Here is the first appearence of the "State of North Borneo" in SCWC!

@Ole Thanks for the insights; I believe in using 'British North Borneo' because that is what their Krause section of the catalogue is titled. It won't make a big problem either way but I imagine it would spare some beginners from looking through the 'N' section before realising it's in the 'B' one.

I'll back that up a 100%.

What about the State of Borneo coins?
Cita: "ngdawa"What about the State of Borneo coins?
Sorry, but no!

On the coins where it's written British North Borneo, should stay British North Borneo!

British North Borneo could contain the sub-division State of North Borneo, because from a certain time that was written on the coins.

That way everybody will be able to find the coins by the two different kind of searches in numista.

Easy search by "North Borneo", and for the advanced search with either "British North Borneo" / "State of North Borneo" / "North Borneo" or just "Borneo".

Please stay with the the names ON the coins.

I was more thinking about what would happen with the State of North Borneo coins, if the North Borneo list got renamed British North Borneo. Would they still be in the same list, or separated. To me it simply doesn't matter, since I just have one coin - the 5 cent State of North Borneo.
In one way I can see that North Borneo is a compromise of British North Borneo and State of North Borneo, and inside that list it could be separated as British North Borneo and State of Borneo - even though it just contains 7 coins.
@ngdawa I thought that was the case as well! But I personally think that the issuer should be named 'British North Borneo' because even in the 1901-2000 Krause catalogue, where the 'State of North Borneo' coins are listed, it is called 'British North Borneo' as well.

Besides, the term 'North Borneo' is potentially very confusing; it could include the Sarawak and Brunei regions as well if taken in a geographical sense.

True, but it's more confusing than that. British North Borneo refers to the Britis controlled territory of the island of Borneo.
The native name of the territory was simply North Borneo (modern day Sabah).
Sarawak and Brunei are too located on Borneo, but not included inside the North Borneo borders. Sarawak takes up the rest of the land of the Malaysian Borneo, which is the central and west part. We cannot confuse Borneo with North Borneo.

In 1956 Sarawak, North Borneo and Brunei wanted to break away from Malaysia and form North Borneo Federation. But as we all know, this never happened.

That's not what I meant when I said it could be confusing: Using 'British North Borneo' prevents confusion between 'North Borneo' and 'North-ern Borneo' the first referring to Sabah (British North Borneo) and the second being a broad geographical term for the northern part of Borneo.
The currency was called the British North Borneo Dollar - so 'British North Borneo' should be the correct name.

Have a read here; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_North_Borneo_dollar .
