I've accumulated several dozen prova (essai, pattern) coins of the issues released for the Portuguese colonies of Angola, Mozambique, Guinea, Timor, etc, some not listed in Krause. Any special suggestions on how to add them to the catalog? Or do I just need to grind through each one of them :-)?
If you've several similar coins that you need to add to the catalogue, I suggest the following shortcut I often use to avoid having to fill in all the information all over again each time:
1) Fill in the form;
2) Click "Add the coin";
3) At the "Your request will be processed soon" screen, click back on your browser.
4) The form already filled out will reappear, and all you have to do is correct the relevant fields, then resubmit it as another coin to be added.
5) Rinse and repeat.
Thank you. I was hoping there is a "Duplicate" button somewhere, but it probably does not make sense as most coins to not have the same level of detail repeating themselves as accepted patterns do.
The main purpose of the duplicate is to replicate the coin already existing, using the Browser trick won't help because most of them have different characteristics, but are identical to existing circulation coins, so duplicating a circulation coin would have been an easy task. I'll try to find some time in the coming years to add what I buy and maybe add some of the existing ones too.
Are you talking about the countermarked issues "PROVA" and "ENSAIO"? Such coins must be added on the year field of the already existent coins, because the coins are the same.

I don't know if this is the case in Portuguese catalogues.... it is with some French ones, to put the Essai issues with the regular strikes, but I have been told to make new pages for essais, certainly if they have separate KM#s.

I very much respect the opinion of the collectors from the country where the issues are originating, but share in the opinion that the pattern coins should be listed separately. This is for the mere fact that these issues are usually prepared before the circulation issue is released and, sometimes, they are not accepted for some reason, remaining unique. It is especially true for competitive designs in France (popular contests) or the US. Unless of course prova issues were minted at the same time as circulation and issued just for collectors, like for example, matte version of some of the Portuguese coins in the 60'th that had sandblasted dies to create a special matte appearance for presentation sets. Can you share the insight if prova were actually issued ahead of the circulation issue for review/approval?
