NEW THREAD IS HERE

Rules/Suggestions:

  • 24 hours per year, starting at UTC/GMT/Zulu midnight (google "zulu time" if you're unsure what the current time is).
  • No limit on number of users who can post for a particular year, as long as they're within that year's 24 hrs (As in, first post doesn't "claim" a year).
  • Limit two coins per user each year
-- Exception for sets/series, but limit those posts to one picture per side of the whole set (so 2 pictures total)
  • Include a link to the Numista catalog for the coin(s) you're showing, so it's easy for people to see more info.
-- If it's not in the catalog, please create a new catalog entry if possible
  • Picture must be of your coin, currently in your collection. Not what you just ordered on ebay, or a coin you sold last year, or the photo from the Numista catalog, etc.
  • Non-Gregorian dates count for the Gregorian year they MOST overlap.
-- HERE is a reference for Arabic until 1700 if you need it.
-- Non-dated coins made only one year are good for that year.

A set of Hong Kong coins issued to commemorate the handover of the colony to China in 1997, usually considered to be the end of the British Empire; I don't usually collect post-colonial coins, but this set was very cheap. It's missing the 10 dollar coin, though.

Moving on to 1996
My only interesting 1996 is a US penny. I know it's 1996 because I found it during that year, when a cashier opened a bank roll with 49 brand new pennies, and this.

For 1996:

1996 A Germany - Federal Republic 10 Deutsche Mark (Kolpingwerk)
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces10555.html

Also from '96:

West African States, 250 francs 1996

African coins generally seem to circulate a lot. This isn't my newest ridiculously worn African coin (I have one from 1998 - the Tanzania 200 shillingi type ZacUK posted), but it's the newest that the date had worn away from.

(But, but, didn't I say it was 1996? Well, the date had disappeared, but the privy mark is still (just) identifiable at 4 o'clock on the reverse, and 1996 was the only year this type was made with that mark.)

Thanks; I just also now learned that you can switch between Ebay sites by replacing the last part of the address, e.g. from "co.uk." to ".fr". I'm now bidding on a piece, I'll see if I can't snap it up for under silver value!

@Mr.Midnight
Aye, but I don't think I'll buy mine back. I think I'll go for a 1986 dated coin, the first year of issue. The older the better, eh. Would've actually been pretty cool if the fantasy 1906 ASEs made by Chinese forgers was a real type!

have a UK eBay account I cannot bid directly on those from other countries, so have to switch.

You did well to vacate your position in physical silver when you did. And you will have freedom to pick up plenty after the bottom, maybe, next year or later. I am no expert, but I listen to them a lot. I don't see any reason to expect a silver bottom above US$10.
Free advice, with caveats that go with such - don't buy any gold this year, either. 8.

1983 France 100 Francs (Panthéon)

This is actually one of those supposedly commemorative coins that ended up being produced for more than 1 year, like the Oregon Trail half dollar or the 1937-38 Australian Coronation Crown. It was made up until the end of the Franc in 2001, and I don't know why; it certainly didn't circulate!
