I don’t really have a dog in this fight since I don’t personally collect banknotes. I recently purchased a couple collections that have come with a number of banknotes. While I was researching them using different sites it did become clear that a numista sister site for banknotes would be very useful to members that collect them. Maybe it’s just because I’ve used numista for a while but the setup is much easier to search for a specific item than any of the other exhisting sites.
Me, I collect banknotes also but not the very extreme ones. I suggest that the collection and the countries should all come together as one for easy reference. It is also best to include the map of the country and history of the country. By doing so, we can save alot of footprint, cost and time.
Be kind to people. Sharing is Caring. Collect what you like and not by the Crowd.
To seek for perfection, it is too painful and there is a very high price to pay. To seek for something comfortable is more easy. To seek for nothing is even more easy.
I think it would take years to get the banknote catalogue up to anything near useful.
If you look at the Colnect site, it lists nearly 100,000 banknotes, so the task to do similar on Numista would be an immense effort by hundreds of collectors, administrators and referees.
As nice a thought as it is, I feel it would not happen. I realise that this prospect is very sad, but the effort seems too great, especially when the other sites exist.

Some of that may be true, but there are banknote collectors who would be more than happy to contribute to a specialised banknote catalogue website.
Way easier to catalog banknotes than coins. I also dont think we should let a great model such as Numista not apply to banknotes because a shoddy website for banknotes already exists.
Had we been allowed to proceed on this already we would have had significantly progressed by now. Eventually, by the day actually, Numista referees are maintaining their catagories... it is these same ones who would be donating their time to create new listings of notes. I seriously doubt people who dont collect notes would have a huge contribution to make to notes. I could be wrong...
But why the hell are folks not wanting to tap into the enthusiasm for those of us that do? Hell. We just want permission to do the damn work!

Aiden,
I fully agree with you in the fact that many collectors would contribute to the catalogue, but it's the monumental task of administrators to validate them all.
I am still waiting for two coins to be validated, so if we suddenly loaded, say, 20,000 banknotes, it would take months to sort out.
Please do not get me wrong. If the banknote system can work as well as the coins system does, then bring it on. My only concern is the time and effort needed.
Questions have been asked about this system for some time, and it does not seem to have move anywhere, so it's the top of the pile that needs convincing first. I would assume that the effort to create the banknote programme would also be long.

Well actually, I believe it would be harder to catalogue banknotes; think about countries like the USA, where before the mid-19th century there were literally thousands of banks issuing regional notes.....
But that's irrelevant; perhaps we should all write to Xavier petitioning for permission to use the Numista format for a banknote site?
I was speaking to a note by note basis. Not a total sum of banknotes. I also have no doubt that talent would appear to do the job...once there is a job to do.
Plus...we have the years of experience with numista. Heck...we dont have to start at year zero of numista ..we would probably be starting at year 5 or 6 at least.
numista started with 1 coin. I think there would be some overlap between the refs. But hell...the refs overlap when the have more than one country anyway.
No one is happy with crappy connect. No one is asking higher ups to do tons of new work. There is a core group ready to go here and get started. It wouldnt take long to get this going. And when people saw the swap function I think we would experience a user renaissance that would visit notes and coins...

As stated earlier, Nunista too started off with just 1 coin in the catalogue. The differemce here that we have all we need to fill it. We don't have to build, expand and update the platform. We have to create layout and codes. All we need to do is to chabge some default settings and fill the catalogue.

I love banknotes too, but I don't think its necessary. There already is a major online catalogue for banknotes and that is Colnect. They have a very active contributing community so having a Numista variant of that seems quite pointless to me.

We want to get it made aware in the E-Sylum online numismatic magazine.
Aidan.
i've seen this post a lot lately, but there's explanation who this wayne is or why we should e-mail him..should we just tell him we want a notista page and he will create one? more info about what the idea is to e-mail him..
thanks
Oklahoman,
Colnect might suck, as you put it, but it is working, whereas, the Numista site has, as far as I read, been talked about for years.
I agree, the exchange method is complicated, but, at this time, it is all us banknote collectors have.
Let's not knock other websites when there is nothing else.
Cita: "COINMAN1"Let's not knock other websites when there is nothing else.
True! Who are we to say that they suck, when we still, after 6 years of talk, still have nothing to show. If anything sucks, then it is that we still don't have a Numista banknote site!
ngdawa,
Thank you for your comment. It is nice to know there is others like me out there.
When Numista has over 106,000 banknotes listed on their new website, I will take as much critical as you can throw at me.
After 6 years and there are no banknotes, no website or the chances of a new website still only a distant vision, please leave Colnect in peace.
If you do not like Colnect, do not use it, but do not criticise those of us that do.
I never criticized those of you who choose to use it. Expressing an opinion about a substandard website is not an indictment against those who use it, or have to use it. I obviously have some experience with the site or having a negative opinion would be ridiculous. I am as entitled to my criticism of a website as you are both entitled to criticize me. But let's be clear, I am not the one being critical of a person.
Thanks for the feedback. It is lousy that Numista does not have a superior alternative, they certainly have collectors here who would contribute to a superior site. Apologies to those who took my criticism of a website as criticism of themselves.

Oklahoman,
I did not take your criticism personally, but just pointing out the true facts that, Colnect has a working banknote website whilst the membership of Numista, are still discussing the rudiments of getting a banknote website, and after 6 years of so are not much further forward.
I fully understand your frustration, but it is the websites hierarchy that needs to realize the members want it very badly.
Cita: "Oklahoman"It is lousy that Numista does not have a superior alternative, they certainly have collectors here who would contribute to a superior site.
I agree! I got first involved in the "Let's start a Numista site for banknotes" in 2013. Back then Xavier simply said "Not interested." So since then we've gone from "No!" to "Let's see if anyone's interested". I see that as progress. In 2040 we might only be a few years away from an actual site!
I raise my hand too!
I have a few hundreds of banknotes to contribute.
This topic has been around for a year or so and the argument is still if it should exist or not!
My personal thought is that it should be created, and those who want to contribute, go ahead. And those who won't, should stay apart.
Let's start!
No Notista site is the only reason why I have a very small banknotes collection. Will be a lot of work, but not hard to build a good notes database.
Just 10 options: you understand binary, or you don't.
Catalog Referee Coins, Banknotes & Exonumia: Uruguay, Cuba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Panama, Ecuador, Zamunda, Parva Domus and more.
Fellows, I think the quarantine is a good opportunity to start working in this project. It´s a good way to help the mind and keep ourselves busy!
If we could only count with the core site, we could start to upload our info right now!
What do you think?

Well, that's a really be if. We once had a whole team and experienced website creators willing to creat a Notista, but as long as Xavier says no, or is indifferent, nothing will happen.
Sorry for being a pessimist, but after 7 years of fighting for this cause I'm starting to accept that this dream will never come true.
Cita: "BCNumismatics"Xavier is going to create a banknote version of Numista.
Aidan.
If this is true it is wonderful news. Can we get a confirmation it is true?
I would be more than happy to contribute photos of my British Empire & British Commonwealth banknotes & postal orders - including those from Ireland - Irish Free State, Dominion of Ireland, & the Republic of Ireland.
