Indian Princely States Question

Pubblicazioni di 6 • visto 183 volte
Hello, everyone, I'm new!

First, great website, it's so thorough and the members and mods obviously care and are dedicated to both coins and the site! Very well-organized.

I have a question that's been nagging me for the last day or so since I found the site and was browsing it. I can't seem to find states like Bela/Las Bela here. I know it has coins because of Krause. I then checked wikipedia (Indian states) and there are a lot of names that don't show up here. Another post on these forums here (last post) has some names that aren't even on the Wikipedia list lol. So am I missing something? I'm sure some of the names are different or didn't have coins (?), but for example Bela did. Otherwise I've found just about anything possible down to some really cooky exonumia :`

Thanks for your responses

Hello, and welcome on Numista!

While I guess it is ok to say that Numista catalogue is quite extensive, it still has gaps, so your example might be one of them. :wiz:

You can also use advances search, select just Indian states and date range if you are not sure.

Thank you for your response,

yeah, I guess it should've been obvious to me. But I previously thought several other states and micronations might not be on here only to find them after doing a raw google search with their name + the site, so I figured I'd ask here.

But I'll compile a list of names from wikipedia and various posts here and elsewhere (I'm obsessively exhaustive like that and like this site that much). and see which Krause (my only source so far) mentions as having coins that aren't catalogued here and post a list, as well as a list of those that Krause doesn't have coins for. I literally only use this site for looking up coins now, that's how easy to use and cool it is. I only cross-reference Krause to see the size of coins for a visual aid vs mm.

For a reference, medieval kingdoms aside, there were 584 princely states in British India (idk if that means there were others outside British India). Also some states had different mints per city.

Since nobody probably even knows the name of all of them, I feel it's more practical to just cite the ones that have coins. I'll list all state names I can find anyway, while trying to cite/link to coins for each, so we know which have available coins:

MINTS

-Kunch mint of Maratha Empire (I checked, not at numista) - Source
I hope I'm being helpful here. ANY corrections are welcome, like different names or if it was some jurisdiction or city and not an actual state with its own coins. I would put coin descriptions for each if that's necessary for them to be in the catalogue (should there be agreement on that about this list).

I'll keep updating this list.

Other Notes

-Bharuch=Broach
-Junagadh=Junagarh
-Mewar-Bhilwara/Chitor/Jawad/Umarda should probably go alongside Mewar coins as, e.g. ½ Paisa - Umarda (18XX-19XX)
-Oudh=Awadh
-Sant/Santrampur/Sunth/Sounth is under Rampur
-Thanjavur-Maratha, Kingdom of = Tore/Tori (wiki: Doctrine of Lapse)
-Udaipur=Mewar
-Vala=Arcot

-Jammu has its own coins even though it was the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir (it was also a kingdom/state since 900)

Well; usually, new countries comes with addition of new coins. I would also have to know what these states were (princely states/kingdom/etc.)

Alright,

I updated the list to specify if it's kingdom or princely state. I'll add more states to it.

As for the coin question, do I need to own any coins and provide pictures as well as descriptions, or would just descriptions work (e.g. if I took the descriptions from Krause or elsewhere)?

(Also, if anyone knows how I can do a collapsible quote, it'd be much appreaciated lol)
