Hi all, I have had this coin in my possession for about 20 years and finally decided to actually see what its all about. I mainly collect US coins but ended up with this from my mother. She can’t remember where she got it from, but thinks it may be from one of her old employers.

After much much research, I think I have a

1911 Reversed Dragon Hsüan-T’ung Silver Specimen Pattern Dollar Year 3.
If this is the real deal, I may just have an extremely rare coin.

The coin does NOT stick to a magnet.

So, in your honest opinion, is this a counterfeit or could this be the real deal?

thanks!

Hello!
I think it is fake, like this:

in the numista page looks like a few people have this coin (rarity index:87), but I think they have just the copy...

Welcome to Numista. Leaning towards replica. Could be because of the photo and lighting but it looks more brass than silver and many of the finer details just don't look right. Check weight and diameter and do some silver tests on it to get a better indication of what it is.

The color of the picture is bad. Sorry.

the coin appears to be silver. I collect silver and this coin looks to be the same as silver.

The photo I attached has horrible lighting so I apologize for that.

What are some other ways to figure out it’d authenticity? I’ll pic up a scale today to get it weighed and I’ll measure the coin as well.
Weight and diameter would be the first test but here are other methods.

If you are sure its real then have it graded by NGC or PCGS that will give you certainty.

"does not stick to a magnet" indicates only it is an alloy other than >90% nickel. copper-nickel alloy <90% nickel has no magnetism. any bronze or cu-ni alloy electro-plated with silver will not stick to a magnet.

silver does react to magnetic fields, due to its very high electrical conductivity. Silver will impede, but not stop the movement of the magnet passing over its surface - or - placed on a slide made of magnets, the silver coin will slide very slowly as if an adhesive fluid was in the gap between the surfaces.

This test to demonstrate silver content is the effect known as para-magnetism. you can find many youtubes about the magnetic slide. supermagnets of neodimium make this very effect vivid.
