Hello All!

I want to enter a Hungarian Quarterling into my list, but can't identify the date. The coin is extremely crude, so much so that I wouldn't want to waste anyone's time with a possible identification. To my mind, it is simply unreadable.

My question is - and this may well be the wrong place for it - having identified the coin as being from the reign of King Sigismund, and I'm sure it is a Quarterling, being from the date 1430-1437; am I allowed by Numista's best practice, to take a stab in the dark, or alot it a date halfway(ish) between 1430-1437? Bearing in mind that I, as I'm sure do others, rely on Numista's database for a list of my coins, in case of theft.

If someone could please advise me of Numista's rules here, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, and it's nice to be back, AY

Edit: P.S. A-I datemark is as close as I can imagine the crude bumps on the coin to be.

Enter it as Undermined.

Thank you. I was unaware of this.

 Much obliged, AY

Hi! If I have understood correctly, could some kind referee please enter Hungary (Sigismund of Luxembourg) into the unknown coins list?

 Thank you.

 Kind regards, AY

If you have determined the type that correlates with a catalog page do as rsirian1 suggested and list it under 'undetermined', if you just have only a rough idea use the page I linked. I had it bookmarked and did not look how the page looks right now after many years and I see it was used by admins as a dumping ground to move owners from old pages most likely before the undetermined year line existed. It should not have more then one year line to be honest and there should be no need to add more. Everything that is known or suspected it could be should be put in private or public comments by the user into one single year line.

Thank you, Sir. I have established that it is a quarterling from the time of Sigismund, but I do not fully understand what I am supposed to do. I can see no category of 'undetermined' on this or any other coin page, so am I correct that I should just list it, and mention in the public comments that the date is undetermined? I'm not going to list it under unknown coins in an improper category, now that categories are there, so perhaps the best idea is to forget about entering it into Numista altogether.

 Thanks for your help.

 Kind regards, AY 😊

Righto! I've entered it into the catalogue with my best guess as to date marks. I've also made it clear that the true date is UNDETERMINED. If anyone wants to move it, that's fine.

 Thanks, AY

You're not missing out much about the dating. This coin doesn't have an exact date on it, just a million variations of mintmarks. Most of those are unresolved and not dated at all, so the 1430-1437 is probably the best you can hope for, even if your coin wasn't be worn.

Some of the mintmarks does have a different date besides them on the Numista page. I've checked it in the ÉH and it does date some of those, but I don't know what are those dating are based on.

Can you tell if the lettering is really A-I?

Hi! Thank you, Idolenz. I had never noticed that before, probably because I don't think I've entered a coin with an undetermined date before. I like my coins as close to UNC as I can get, and this one was a gift from my main coin supplier, probably because he knows I like to research coins in whatever condition. The only reason I knew it was a quarting from the time of Sigismund is because it was written on the previous owner's flip. So, now I know what to do with coins with an underdetermined date. It is a good day, thank you. 😊

 Hello, rsirian1!

As I said, it was my best guess, so no, I cannot. I am relieved by the information provided by SGreg85, and I thank him for it. It means I can give up on this and get on with something more meaningful. For the record, the information regarding the date of this troublesome but interesting coin has been updated.

Thanks to all who have taken an interest in this topic. 🙏

 Best regards, AY
