It the coin star a good place to find foreigne coins or not ?

recent coin star finds also how often do u guys find silver. I found my first silver 10 cents in a coin star 1966
A few years ago, I had a lot of good luck at CoinStars, and it is the only place I've found wild silver. Lately, my luck has dried up.
CoinStar is hit or miss for me. I've made many trips to the machines in the grocery stores only to find nothing. But I have found many coins over the years. (A doff of the cap to Cerulean for tipping me off to this technique.)
Mainly I find US dimes. For some reason, the machine rejects newer dimes. But I have found 5 silver dimes (1961-63) as well as other coins, both foreign and domestic at the 4 machines I frequent. My best haul was 3 Sacagewea dollar coins left in the reject bin.
Just keep going and keep checking. You never know what's going to be in there.
For 3 years now I have bin getting a lot of luck but there are times there is nothing and there are times there is nothing.
A hit or miss for me. Sometimes I find some random things only interesting to coin geeks like us but it seems less and less these days because many people seem to be checking the reject bins as it almost always is empty.
For me people often come to the machine mostly around holidays and after the summer once coming from vacations and in those times I find euros and a lot of foreign stuff
Do you just take the coins from the reject tray ? They have these machines in the UK, but pretty sure they'd do you for theft if you took them here.

Yes, I do. I try not to be super obvious about it though. In my opinion, it's the same as a coin on the floor. If the previous owner is not there, it's free game.

Not a problem. The only place where I have been challenged from taking coins from the reject tray is on the city bus. I think the drivers consider abandoned change to be part of their tip jar.

Yes every supermarket I visit, I always have a look. When I do find anything, it is often Euro schrapnel, US cents or bent UK coins (you can always spend them again). But I have had a few more interesting finds. If someone has left it, it is fair game in my opinion.

Thinking about it, if the coins have been "rejected" it must be that they are not wanted, so I suppose fair game, I mean, who would want all those grubby pre 1947 coins , when you can have nice shiny decimal coin.
After years of no finds in the coin star I found this. Not really worth all the effort I put into it, but I can’t resist the reject tray...

I have had more luck from the coin spinner at my bank. Once I found a 1909 wheat cent.

I hit the jackpot the other day. Got $4 Canadian, silver dime and 1991 quarter included.
Over 4 Euros and over 4 pounds UK. I couldn't believe my luck. Must have been a real newbie running the machine. The reject tray was full I just scooped it out into my grocery bag as fast as I could. Most of the time there may be a coin or two but this was so full some coins were still keeping the chute open.
Yesterday while leaving the grocery store I quickly swiped my hand thru the reject tray . Out in car i spied my haul a beat up 1964 washington quarter. Over the years i have scored 3 silver dimes and handful of foreign coins ,now i can add the silver quarter

I had a swipe of the reject tray yesterday, found about 40p in 2p's and 5p's and these -

The 5 fils is something I haven't had before.

My best hall was $17 of circulation coins. All loonies and toonies, most of which were shiny colourised ones.

That was probly the best luck Ive had. I also look at vending machines trays and have gotten loonies and toonies on many occasions.

Some people find silver, this is what I found…

Just some low denominated polish coinage and about 20 Euro Cents in 2s and 5s.

Two new finds, once I found $80 in change, and once I found 2, 80% silver quarters (1962) and a 1967  50% silver dime.

You found $80 in one coin machine? Ours wouldn’t hold that much in the reject tray.

This week I went back to the same store, the machine was empty but I took a pencil in with me and humbled my pride. I got on my hands and knees looking like a beggar and found $2.25 under the machine. I wouldn’t do this for pocket change…

but look! I found what I was looking for. A 1959 silver dime! Woohoo!

I am now thinking of making a tool to pry off the sticky coins that are under the machine and reach coins that are further under.

I could not run out of the store quicker. Twice …

A few weeks ago I had pocketfuls of foreign coins - yet to be checked …

Walking past the Coin Star there were a few coins on the floor, and after I picked those

up I looked in the reject tray and it was overflowing with coins, hence those on the floor.

I grabbed all of them in several handfuls and was quickly out of there. 🏃

A few days ago I went past the same machine and instead of the usual foreign coins,

there were all these UK coins …

I guess that as the machine makes a lot of noise while it is counting,

the customer did not hear all those being rejected.

Still wondering though why they were rejected - all are current coins. ✔️

A list of each lot to follow.

I found a half cent in the coin Star machine once

After months of nothing, had two good finds in a row - $1.35 U.S., and a Dominican Republic 10 pesos. Then, U.S. Quarter, Canadian Quarter and a 1942 Mercury Dime.

It was 1793 half cent. Guess someone tryed to cash in grandpas collection

Zac, I love the patina on that one pound coin under that 20 Euro cent.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Found this today:

1966 Greece 50 Lepta far from home.  About the same size as a US dime. Also, 2 very ugly pennies.

Some recent finds:

USA, 1 dime, 1928 - This is my second wild Merc find this year so far, and is now the oldest dime in my collection.  (First a 1954-S, then a 1937, and now a 1928…. I hope this trend continues through '24!)

Jamaica, 5 dollars, 1996

Barbados, 25 cents, 2011 - only the third wild coin from Barbados I've found since 2007, and now the youngest Barbadian coin in my collection.

(Duplicate post deleted)

Another good turn of luck!  This silver Washington quarter is now my third oldest quarter, and the oldest one with a legible date on it.

Had some good luck at the Coinstar tonight:

Morocco, 1 dirham, 2021/1442 - This is the third Moroccan coin I've found in circulation since 2007, and it's also now the youngest Moroccan coin in my collection.

UK, 20 pence, 2012

USA, 1 dime - The date is damaged, but I can make out “nineteen-fifty-something” ….. SILVER!  This is my fourth silver dime found in circulation in 2024.  What a year!

…and $1.15 in everyday coins.

Two more tonight:

Spain, 10 euro cents, 1999

UK, 5 pence, 2005

Nothing special, but still fun to find.

United Arab Emirates, 1 Dirham , 2014

It was by itself in the return slot.

And in the very same reject tray, two days later:

Trinidad & Tobago, 1 cent, 2016 - new date from my collection, and my youngest coin from T&T.

Found a 1946 Roosevelt dime and a 1942 Mercury Dime not in the reject tray, but on the shelf. Someone must have pulled them out, thought they were trash and left them. Their trash is now my treasure.

Nothing special this time, just one rusty and crusty German 1950-D ten pfennig.

A couple good finds today: a silver dime from 1964, a Chuck E. Cheese token from 1990, and seven ordinary coins worth $0.40.

I found this in the reject tray of a coinstar today, along with a handful of US cents.

Jamais l'or n'a perdu la plus petite occasion de se montrer stupide. -Balzac

Today's haul from a Coin Star machine at a local Cub Foods:

  • Canada 3x 10 Cents 1972, 1979, 1981
  • China 1 Jiao 2005 (magnetic)
  • Jamaica 10 Dollars 1999
  • Mexico $1 2010, N$5 1993
HoH

Just one more tonight… Germany, 1 pfennig, 1984-D.  That's the second German mark-era coin in two months.  Unlike March's ugly 10pf, this one is in above average condition, likely an upgrade over the one I already have.

My first find from a CoinStar in several years:

1.  1965 Sweden 2 Öre - Gustaf VI Adolf

2.  1999 France 5 Euro Cents

3.   1957 Spain 5 Pesetas - Francisco Franco

4.  2001-D Lincoln Cent

Singapore 20 Cents 2018

Mexico 5 Pesos 2018

Mexico 10 Pesos 2008

And two ugly pennies that don't deserve to have their pictures taken.

Another Canadian dime, 1977 this time, and a copper cent from the dodecagon period.

Jamais l'or n'a perdu la plus petite occasion de se montrer stupide. -Balzac

Among the few coins left behind on the Coinstar last night was a 1964-D Roosevelt, the ninth silver dime I've found since 2022.

Finally, after what seems like weeks of nothing, I found 5 foreign coins in my local Coinstar Machine, as well as some US dimes and pennies.

Nice to find Romanian and Turkish coins along with the Canadian trio.

Went to a coinstar machine yesterday but didn’t find anything unfortunately

Today's coinstar rejects -

The 1942D is about F, but has some residue issues. The 1977D I think has a legit clipped planchet mint error.

I had never seen a Fiji cent from the 60s before, much less in circulation in the US.

Me again. I live in a college town. I know local vendors who have buckets of euro coins. I imagine wait staff use the Coinstar more than most people walking around.

These coins were grungy and green. I gave them a scrub in hot soppy water with an old tooth brush.

At the CoinStar tonight: Italy, 1 Euro, 2006

Tonight's haul: US - 12 pennies,  7 dimes and a quarter. 4 Canadian quarters from 1993, 1994, 2006 and 2009, a 1960 Canadia  nickel, 1 Mexican peso from 2007, 1 UK penny from 1978, 1 Bahamas penny from 2009, and a silver US dime from 1952.

At the very same CoinStar machine, exactly one week later:  Greece, 2 euros, 2002.

They are just getting to smart here. Haven't anything in a Coin Star for ages.

American collector living the life in Germany

A good day at the CoinStar:

France, 10 euro cent, 2013

Germany, 5 euro cent, 2002-F

Morocco, 20 santeem, 2011 (AH 1432)

UK, penny, 2016

A very very good day at the CoinStar:

right place, right time - just got back with this bagful

Wondering if there is a record for the number of coins found in a reject tray.

Walking to checkouts with a bag of shopping, going past the CoinStar I saw

an unbelievable amount - literally a tray full. Luckily in my shopping

bag I had an empty clear plastic bag - otherwise my pockets would have been bulging.

The smallest circulating UK coin is 5 Pence - strangely smaller than the 1 Pence -

and it looks like 95% of the collected coins are those, plus 20 Pence and £2 I saw.

Maybe in an hour I will have made a list and counted the total …

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

Wow. I struck out twice at two different stores in the last 3 days.

Thanks! Total … 331 coins, face value £20.02, and 2 foreign coins.

The first two pictures are straight after I counted and wrote the shown list.

Later when re-checking I then found 2 of the 300 5 Pence coins were foreign,

so the last picture shows the correct amounts.

Then still 331 coins, face value now £19.92, and 4 foreign coins, technically.

Only two really foreign coins, the other two with UK connections.

[2015] N#24942

[1993] N#1385

[1990] N#9531

Lastly, 331 coins minus 2 foreign = 329 coins that for some reason the machine rejected.

Nothing wrong with them, so it is a mystery how they got in the tray. Still, good for me! 💗

How many Coinstar machines do you go to in order to get the amount of coins you do? The city I live in only has two Coinstar machines, and in the few times that I went to one of them, it didn’t seem to have any coins besides some worn and dirty coins (so dirty you can’t even tell what type of coin it is)

Did you know that Pluto is still a planet in Illinois and New Mexico and has de facto recognition as a planet in Arizona?

Not sure about other members, but I mainly only go to one supermarket,

the one nearest me, on the edge of town. A second store of theirs a few miles

further away also has one. Very occasionally I may go into a few other

different stores if I am in their area, and vaguely remember some also have them.

Looks like the coinstar rejected mostly pre 2011 non magnetic 5ps and 10ps as the post 2011s are slightly thicker, so maybe the machine was calibrated with a UNC magnetic 5p and 10p that’s why it might be rejecting the worn thinner pre 2011s.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

What a find tonight!

Bahamas, 5 cents, 1998

Bolivia, 20 centavos, 2010

Canada, 25 cents, 2008

France, 20 euro cents, 2007

Mexico, 5 pesos, 2018

UAE, 1 dirham, 2014/1435

…And $1.13 in typical domestic coins.

On holiday in Spain last week, popped into Carrefour and i-spy a Coinstar machine.

Not a great haul, but the 2 Argentinian 1 Pesos (2019 & 2020) are something I doubt I'd find in the UK.

I checked today, and you are correct. All the 5p coins are the thinner older type!

Another disappointing day but better than normal.

A 2 euro cent from Cyprus

and US $0.29.

My coinstar machine is the roads around town while I'm riding my bike.

We don't have coinstar machines where I live, but I always find coins on the road while I'm riding around, that and rings.  For some reason I always find rings lying around.  I've found 4 of them this year.

This is my latest find.  A gold wedding band and a New Zealand 2 cent coin, which is weird because we haven't used 2c coins for 35 years.

What? Me Worry

Nice. That looks to be gold. Is there a fineness mark inside? Weight?

No, I think it's stainless steel coloured to look like gold.  One of the other rings I found was a 9 carat Celtic braid, and another was a sterling silver braid.  I handed those ones into the police station, and I didn't get them back so I assume they got claimed.  The gold braid was a bit battered.  It looked like it had been run over a few times, so I took it to a jeweler to get them to knock it back into shape before took it  to the police.

Have you found a ring with a finger still inside? 😁

Interesting find, half a double head nickel.

wrong glue, I guess, and poorly applied apparently.
