CoinStar is hit or miss for me. I've made many trips to the machines in the grocery stores only to find nothing. But I have found many coins over the years. (A doff of the cap to Cerulean for tipping me off to this technique.)
Mainly I find US dimes. For some reason, the machine rejects newer dimes. But I have found 5 silver dimes (1961-63) as well as other coins, both foreign and domestic at the 4 machines I frequent. My best haul was 3 Sacagewea dollar coins left in the reject bin.
Just keep going and keep checking. You never know what's going to be in there.
A hit or miss for me. Sometimes I find some random things only interesting to coin geeks like us but it seems less and less these days because many people seem to be checking the reject bins as it almost always is empty.
For me people often come to the machine mostly around holidays and after the summer once coming from vacations and in those times I find euros and a lot of foreign stuff
Cita: "trickyd"Do you just take the coins from the reject tray ? They have these machines in the UK, but pretty sure they'd do you for theft if you took them here.
Yes, I do. I try not to be super obvious about it though. In my opinion, it's the same as a coin on the floor. If the previous owner is not there, it's free game.

Not a problem. The only place where I have been challenged from taking coins from the reject tray is on the city bus. I think the drivers consider abandoned change to be part of their tip jar.

Yes every supermarket I visit, I always have a look. When I do find anything, it is often Euro schrapnel, US cents or bent UK coins (you can always spend them again). But I have had a few more interesting finds. If someone has left it, it is fair game in my opinion.

Thinking about it, if the coins have been "rejected" it must be that they are not wanted, so I suppose fair game, I mean, who would want all those grubby pre 1947 coins , when you can have nice shiny decimal coin.
I hit the jackpot the other day. Got $4 Canadian, silver dime and 1991 quarter included.
Over 4 Euros and over 4 pounds UK. I couldn't believe my luck. Must have been a real newbie running the machine. The reject tray was full I just scooped it out into my grocery bag as fast as I could. Most of the time there may be a coin or two but this was so full some coins were still keeping the chute open.
Yesterday while leaving the grocery store I quickly swiped my hand thru the reject tray . Out in car i spied my haul a beat up 1964 washington quarter. Over the years i have scored 3 silver dimes and handful of foreign coins ,now i can add the silver quarter

Just some low denominated polish coinage and about 20 Euro Cents in 2s and 5s.
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
This week I went back to the same store, the machine was empty but I took a pencil in with me and humbled my pride. I got on my hands and knees looking like a beggar and found $2.25 under the machine. I wouldn’t do this for pocket change…
but look! I found what I was looking for. A 1959 silver dime! Woohoo!
I am now thinking of making a tool to pry off the sticky coins that are under the machine and reach coins that are further under.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
After months of nothing, had two good finds in a row - $1.35 U.S., and a Dominican Republic 10 pesos. Then, U.S. Quarter, Canadian Quarter and a 1942 Mercury Dime.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

It is a machine where people can turn in unwanted coins for cash.
Additionally it has a tray of coins that were not accepted, usually coins of similar size to circulating coins or, especially in the US and Canada, silver coins.

Last week found 12 coins where someone got them out of the rejects then just
left them on the centre part.
UK - 1 Penny, 5 Pence
Euro - 1 Cent, 2 Cents [2], 5 Cents [2]
Canada - 1 Cent
USA - Quarter Dollar [1999 Pennsylvania 1787]
Australia - 5 Cents
Turkey - 25 Kurus
Plastic coin - 1 Penny [Bank of Tesco]
Then today I felt inside the reject tray and found 23 coins.
UK - 1 Penny [6], 2 Pence [3], 5 Pence [2]
Euro - 1 Cent, 2 Cents [3]
Canada - 10 Cents
USA - 1 Cent
UK obsolete - ½ Penny, 6 Pence [4], 1 Shilling
Wondering what I might find next week …
Interesting, so it accepts the round pounds but not the old 5p/10p coins
Sometimes I’ve found old 1 Shillings and “chunky” 5ps within bags of 10ps because they are quite similar in size.

USA, 1 dime, 1928 - This is my second wild Merc find this year so far, and is now the oldest dime in my collection. (First a 1954-S, then a 1937, and now a 1928…. I hope this trend continues through '24!)
Jamaica, 5 dollars, 1996
Barbados, 25 cents, 2011 - only the third wild coin from Barbados I've found since 2007, and now the youngest Barbadian coin in my collection.
Morocco, 1 dirham, 2021/1442 - This is the third Moroccan coin I've found in circulation since 2007, and it's also now the youngest Moroccan coin in my collection.
UK, 20 pence, 2012
USA, 1 dime - The date is damaged, but I can make out “nineteen-fifty-something” ….. SILVER! This is my fourth silver dime found in circulation in 2024. What a year!
Found a 1946 Roosevelt dime and a 1942 Mercury Dime not in the reject tray, but on the shelf. Someone must have pulled them out, thought they were trash and left them. Their trash is now my treasure.

I usually find that the reject tray doesn’t have anything, but once i found at least 30 wheat pennies, ranging from 1918-1958. Haven’t had much luck otherwise.

I agree, but one must look…

Just one more tonight… Germany, 1 pfennig, 1984-D. That's the second German mark-era coin in two months. Unlike March's ugly 10pf, this one is in above average condition, likely an upgrade over the one I already have.
Me again. I live in a college town. I know local vendors who have buckets of euro coins. I imagine wait staff use the Coinstar more than most people walking around.
These coins were grungy and green. I gave them a scrub in hot soppy water with an old tooth brush.

Tonight's haul: US - 12 pennies, 7 dimes and a quarter. 4 Canadian quarters from 1993, 1994, 2006 and 2009, a 1960 Canadia nickel, 1 Mexican peso from 2007, 1 UK penny from 1978, 1 Bahamas penny from 2009, and a silver US dime from 1952.
How many Coinstar machines do you go to in order to get the amount of coins you do? The city I live in only has two Coinstar machines, and in the few times that I went to one of them, it didn’t seem to have any coins besides some worn and dirty coins (so dirty you can’t even tell what type of coin it is)
Did you know that Pluto is still a planet in Illinois and New Mexico and has de facto recognition as a planet in Arizona?
Lastly, 331 coins minus 2 foreign = 329 coins that for some reason the machine rejected.
Nothing wrong with them, so it is a mystery how they got in the tray. Still, good for me! 💗
Looks like the coinstar rejected mostly pre 2011 non magnetic 5ps and 10ps as the post 2011s are slightly thicker, so maybe the machine was calibrated with a UNC magnetic 5p and 10p that’s why it might be rejecting the worn thinner pre 2011s.

I checked today, and you are correct. All the 5p coins are the thinner older type!
My coinstar machine is the roads around town while I'm riding my bike.
We don't have coinstar machines where I live, but I always find coins on the road while I'm riding around, that and rings. For some reason I always find rings lying around. I've found 4 of them this year.
This is my latest find. A gold wedding band and a New Zealand 2 cent coin, which is weird because we haven't used 2c coins for 35 years.
No, I think it's stainless steel coloured to look like gold. One of the other rings I found was a 9 carat Celtic braid, and another was a sterling silver braid. I handed those ones into the police station, and I didn't get them back so I assume they got claimed. The gold braid was a bit battered. It looked like it had been run over a few times, so I took it to a jeweler to get them to knock it back into shape before took it to the police.

Have you found a ring with a finger still inside? 😁
